About this role

Reporting to the Director of the Center for Staff Life Design, we are seeking a Life Design Consultant for Manager Development,  a dynamic individual with expertise in course design, digital learning technologies, and curriculum planning and development.

The Life Design Consultant will deliver on the mission of the Center for Staff Life Design by planning, developing, and curating professional skills-oriented training and programming for JHU staff. The Life Design Consultant is assigned a portfolio of responsibility (for example: a campus, division, or job families) and is expected to deliver life design content and innovate scalable programming to their portfolio.

The Life Design Consultant will expertly support staff engagement through their programming, training, delivery, and practices in ways that are appropriate to the mission and values of Johns Hopkins University.

It is expected that the Life Design Consultant will actively travel between Johns Hopkins campuses and among departments to assure quality and engaging delivery of Staff Life Design programming both in person and virtually.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

General Life Design Consultant Duties

- Collaborate with university stakeholders and staff to assess needs and create new professional development services to support career development priorities for CSLD at JHU.
- Implement effective assessment and evaluation tools for programming aligned to current CSLD and JHU standards and best practices.
- Drive digital engagement strategies and represent JHU in thought leadership capacities.
- Design and develop digital courses using Eightfold, Articulate, Adobe AI, Cornerstone, and other learning technologies.
- Learn and integrate the Eightfold platform and JHU's career architecture into the Center for Staff Life Design's curriculum.
- Utilize SharePoint and web design tools such as Canva, HTML, and CSS to create engaging and accessible digital content.
- Plan and execute large-scale and small-scale events, including both digital and in-person engagements in collaboration with CSLD, Divisional, and HR stakeholders.
- Develop and implement innovative career development programs and services that support the professional growth of JHU staff.
- Conduct needs assessments and gather feedback to continuously improve program offerings.
- Other duties as assigned.

Specialist Responsibilities (Manager Development and Readiness)

- Lead the design, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of the Johns Hopkins manager development and readiness ecosystem for aspiring, new, and experienced managers that supports 3,000 documented staff engagements per year.
- Serve as the primary program lead for the CSLD Manager Academies, guiding discovery, co-design, pilot delivery, launch, facilitation, and ongoing program evolution.
- Design manager development pathways that connect leadership capability, small-team management, career mobility, university operations, and professional growth across career stages.
- Design and facilitate engaging virtual and in-person learning experiences on topics including communication, feedback, coaching, career conversations, delegation, emotional intelligence, difficult conversations, collaboration, strategic thinking, and change leadership.
- Integrate Life Design principles into manager development experiences to strengthen coaching capability, employee growth, engagement, retention, and internal mobility.
- Develop and maintain manager development plans, pathway maps, facilitator resources, assessment tools, coaching materials, digital learning experiences, and manager toolkits using university learning technologies.
- Collaborate with university leaders, HR partners, Organizational Development and Effectiveness, schools, divisions, and subject matter experts to identify leadership capability needs and translate them into scalable learning experiences.
- Use human-centered design methods, stakeholder research, co-design activities, and learner feedback to continuously improve manager readiness experiences and outcomes.
- Apply data, assessment, and program evaluation methods to measure participation, engagement, application of learning, manager capability development, and overall program effectiveness.
- Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

- Bachelor’s Degree in any subject area and 1 year of work experience or equivalent of a master’s degree by way of JHU work and education equivalency formula (approximately five years of work experience in HR or Education).
- One year of experience in teaching or facilitating active-learning workshops or classes.
- Certification or 1 year of experience in human-centered design, life design, or user experience (UX) design and research methodologies.
- Proven experience in designing digital courses using PowerPoint, Articulate, Cornerstone, LinkedIn Learning, and other learning technologies.
- Very strong proficiency in PowerPoint, SharePoint, Canva, HTML, Smartsheet (or similar project management tools), Visual Design, and CSS.
- Commitment to teach in person and virtually as required.
- Commitment to and evidence of strong teaming and collaborative work practices.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

- Master’s Degree.
- Five years of work experience within a higher education, government, non-profit, or corporate setting.
- Two years of demonstrated success in managing, leading, or supervising a team, multi-person program, or cross-functional initiative that required small team, director-level, or executive leadership.
- Experience with Life Design principles, design thinking, coaching, or career development.
- Experience designing learning pathways, skills frameworks, capability models, or employee development programs.
- Experience working with learning management systems, talent marketplaces, skills intelligence platforms, or career navigation systems.
- Familiarity with myCareer, Eightfold, Career Architecture, LinkedIn Learning, or related workforce development technologies.
- Experience facilitating leadership development, manager development, professional skills, or technical skills programs.
- Strong visual communication and instructional design skills.
- Experience conducting human-centered design research and stakeholder engagement activities.
- Excellent communication, facilitation, and relationship-building skills.
