About the role

Reporting to the EHS Manager, the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist plays an important role in supporting a safe, compliant, and engaging workplace at Hach’s Ames facility. Partnering with the EHS Manager, site leaders, and associates, you will support environmental, health, and safety programs in a chemical manufacturing environment, helping drive day-to-day EHS compliance, training, reporting, audits, incident follow-up, job safety analyses, emergency preparedness, and continuous improvement activities that strengthen our safety culture and support regulatory requirements.

This position is part of the Environmental Health & Safety team located in Ames, IA, and will be onsite in Ames, IA.

In this role, a typical day will look like

- Serve as the primary EHS point of contact for the Ames site, providing backup support to the EHS Manager and partnering with leadership to strengthen safety culture.

- Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, IDNR, and other regulatory requirements, including environmental reporting and ISO certification standards.

- Conduct job safety analyses, investigate workplace incidents, implement corrective actions, and support workers’ compensation processes.

- Develop, implement, and continuously improve EHS policies, procedures, training programs, and emergency response protocols.

- Coordinate safety committees, emergency response teams, audits, and ISO certifications while maintaining EHS reporting systems, records, and performance metrics.

The essential requirements of the job include

- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, Engineering, Sustainability, or a related science/technical field, with 3+ years of EHS experience in manufacturing (or equivalent combination of education and experience).

- Demonstrated experience with regulatory compliance, permitting, OSHA/EPA programs, reporting, and recordkeeping.

- Training in RCRA Hazardous Waste Management or equivalent experience.

- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and comfort using digital tools and EHS management systems.

- Ability to work onsite in Ames, IA, and to travel 1–2 times per year.

It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in

- Professional EHS certifications such as ASP, GSP, CSP, or CIH.

- ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems.

- Cority or similar EHS management software.

The below range reflects the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future. An associate’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors, including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, shift, travel requirements, sales or revenue-based metrics, any collective bargaining agreements, and business or organizational needs.

The compensation range for this role is $65,000 - $85,000 USD per year. This job is also eligible for Bonus Pay.
