About the Role
The Lead Truck Driver is responsible for safely operating a lowboy/low-bed truck and step-deck hydraulic dovetail equipment trailer to transport heavy construction equipment to customer job sites, while also leading the daily delivery operation. This role coordinates the delivery schedule, trains and supports other drivers, and serves as the point of contact between the delivery team, rental management, and customers. This is a hands-on role, with the majority of time spent driving. The position requires strong driving and loading skills, sound judgment, and a firm commitment to safety and DOT compliance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Team Leadership: Lead, train, and mentor delivery drivers on safe operation, loading and unloading procedures, cargo securement, and company standards.
- Delivery Scheduling and Dispatch: Work with the Rental Manager to plan and assign daily deliveries and pickups, balancing driver availability, routes, equipment readiness, and customer timelines.
- Operating a Lowboy Truck: Safely drive a lowboy truck with manual transmission and a heavy load, ensuring proper weight distribution and compliance with DOT regulations.
- Loading and Unloading Cargo: Use extreme caution when loading and unloading heavy construction equipment onto the lowboy trailer, and model safe practices for the delivery team.
- Pre-Trip Inspections: Perform thorough pre-trip inspections of the truck and trailer, including tires, lights, brakes, and securing mechanisms, and verify that other drivers complete inspections consistently.
- Route Planning and Permits: Plan complex routes based on load size and weight limitations, and obtain necessary permits for oversized loads.
- Cargo Securement: Properly secure equipment using chains and straps to prevent movement during transport, and check securement on loads handled by other drivers as needed.
- Customer and Site Coordination: Coordinate with job site personnel and customers to ensure smooth deliveries and pickups, and handle delivery-related questions or issues.
- Fleet Maintenance: Perform basic maintenance checks on trucks and trailers, track service needs, and report issues to mechanics promptly.
- Compliance and Recordkeeping: Ensure the delivery team follows all DOT regulations for hours of service, weight limits, and safety standards, and help maintain driver logs, inspection reports, and related records.
- Continuous Improvement: Identify ways to improve delivery efficiency, safety, and customer service, and share recommendations with management.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
