Landscape & Grounds Technician
REPORTS TO:
Senior Director Facilities
POSITION SUMMARY
The Landscape & Grounds Technician is responsible for maintaining the exterior grounds, landscaping, outdoor common areas, and overall appearance of YWCA Central Alabama properties. This position supports Facilities Management by helping ensure assigned properties are clean, attractive, safe, accessible, and professionally maintained.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain lawns, landscaped areas, flower beds, shrubs, trees, sidewalks, parking lots, and other exterior areas.
- Mow, edge, trim, weed, rake, mulch, and maintain landscaped areas on a regular schedule.
- Remove leaves, limbs, trash, debris, and other materials from YWCA grounds.
- Maintain sidewalks, curbs, entrances, loading areas, parking lots, and exterior common areas.
- Pressure wash sidewalks, building entrances, exterior surfaces, and other areas as assigned.
- Trim shrubs, bushes, and small trees to maintain a professional and safe appearance.
- Assist with planting flowers, shrubs, grass, and other landscaping materials.
- Monitor grounds for safety hazards, damaged property, drainage concerns, lighting issues, pest activity, and needed repairs.
- Report unsafe conditions, property damage, or significant maintenance concerns to the Facilities Manager.
- Maintain and properly store landscaping tools, equipment, and supplies; perform basic equipment cleaning and preventive maintenance.
- Prepare exterior areas for organizational events, inspections, leadership visits, and special programs.
- Assist the Facilities Department with minor maintenance assignments and weather-related grounds preparation or cleanup as needed.
- Follow YWCA safety procedures and properly use required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Complete assigned work orders, grounds checklists, and other documentation as required.
- Perform other Facilities Management duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Previous landscaping, grounds maintenance, lawn care, facilities maintenance, or related experience preferred.
- Knowledge of basic lawn care, landscaping practices, and safe equipment operation.
- Ability to safely operate lawn mowers, weed trimmers, blowers, pressure washers, hand tools, and related grounds equipment.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work independently.
- Strong attendance, reliability, time-management skills, and attention to detail.
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position requires regular outdoor work in varying weather conditions. The employee must be able to stand and walk for extended periods; bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull; safely operate grounds equipment; and lift and carry materials and equipment weighing approximately 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation. Work may include exposure to heat, cold, rain, dust, grass, landscaping materials, and equipment noise.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
- Associate’s degree in mechanical, electrical, or industrial maintenance, or 4+ years of maintenance experience preferred.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle, pass a DMV screening, and be insurable to drive our fleet vehicles required.
- Ability to use Microsoft Office, email, mobile phone systems, and work order tracking systems such as eSpace.
- Adheres to all workplace and safety laws, regulations, standards, and practices.
- Familiar with building codes and safety requirements.
- Ability to identify the appropriate tools, machinery, and/or vehicle to complete assigned work.
- Ability to work well with a team as well as YWCA clients and guests.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Full-time, hourly position with standard working hours Monday through Friday,
8 a.m. – 5 p.m. or its equivalent, and evenings and/or weekends as required to respond to urgent maintenance issues.
- Required to work in both an office and residential environment.
- Long periods of time working away from a desk and moving around various YWCA facilities.
- This position requires the ability to use standard office equipment, including a computer and telephone each work day. The incumbent will be required to attend meetings or other functions. May be required to lift to 50 lbs.
- Incumbent may be exposed to loud noises, electrical equipment, moving mechanical parts, high, precarious places (such as roof tops and ladders), fumes, and outdoor weather conditions.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to use personal vehicle to travel to remote office and/or events as required.
- Primarily in the areas of Birmingham and Woodlawn, with some travel to Homewood. Occasional travel in St. Clair and Blount Counties.
