Trails Park and Recreation District helps bring recreation, wellness, and connection to residents in the eastern Centennial area. We operate and maintain several parks, trails, open spaces, and facilities all designed to create places where people can get outside, be active, and spend time together. We also offer a wide range of programs for all ages, including youth sports, summer camps, fitness classes, community events, and activities for active aging.

SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Recreation Manager, the Fitness and Wellness Supervisor provides leadership and oversight of the District’s Fitness and Wellness Department. This position is responsible for department planning and development, budget development and management, program evaluation, cost recovery, staffing, facility and equipment planning, and establishing policies, procedures, and priorities. The position provides direction to fitness leadership and ensures programs, services, and operations align with District goals and community needs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Primary responsibilities include overseeing 2 full-time and 25-30 part-time employees and making vital business, service, and budgetary decisions for the Fitness and Wellness department
- Provide oversight of the planning, development, scheduling, promotion, coordination, evaluation, and marketing of the Trails Fitness and Wellness programs, including group fitness, water aerobics, personal training, yoga, Pilates, cycling, youth, adult, and senior specialty fitness programs, special events, fitness assessments, community wellness programs, nutritional counseling, and employee wellness programs
- Research, recommend, and implement programs and changes to existing programs as needed
- Prepare annual budget for Fitness and Wellness department through monitoring and evaluating programs, compiling participation information, and expenditure and revenue reports for programs and activities
- Develop new and amend existing job descriptions as needed; recruit, hire, train, supervise, and schedule part-time recreation staff and contract personnel
- Manage personnel functions including evaluations, administering discipline, investigating, and resolving grievances and handling personnel issues as needed
- Review, maintain, and revise as necessary the Fitness training manual including program standards, risk and time management, staff development, service guidelines, and emergency procedures
- Responsible for curriculum development; organize technically correct and safe program and ensure that staff maintain appropriate certifications through nationally recognized organizations including, but not limited to, the American College of Exercise (ACE), Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA), American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), CPR, AED, and first aid
- Acts as advisor for the Silver Sneakers and Renew Active Programs including, but not limited to, appropriate documentation and submission of new and current member paperwork, planning and scheduling social activities, and evaluation of programming required for these plans
- Conduct regular staff meetings and include in-service trainings on fitness and wellness related activities, injury prevention, class instruction procedures, changes, and upcoming trends
- Compile a list, create bid packages, and purchase all equipment and supplies needed for Fitness and Wellness programs. Ensure proper care of all equipment
- Initiate and plan cooperative programs with local hospitals, doctors offices, and community health organizations. Network with all facets of the community for program development and enhancement
- Respond to patrons questions, comments and concerns within 24-48 hours to promote customer service quality assurance
- Establish and maintain a working environment conducive to positive morale, individual style, quality, creativity, and teamwork
- May be required to instruct classes should assigned personnel not show up
- Complies with District rules and regulations, policies and procedures
- Participates in a required, consistent weekly Manager on Duty (MOD) rotation, serving one scheduled MOD shift each week. Shifts may include openings, closings, and/or weekends based on facility needs.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Recreation Manager
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY:
- Considerable knowledge in fitness/wellness management; knowledge of practices and techniques regarding recreation program administration and fiscal management
- Knowledge of cardiovascular and strength equipment and ability to demonstrate to staff and patrons.
- Knowledge of best practices in fitness, wellness, and the parks and recreation field
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
- Plan, promote, and supervise fitness/wellness activities/programs
- Recruit, train, and supervise fitness staff
- Establish and maintain professional working relationships with other District personnel, general public, vendors, contractual companies, and representatives of other governmental agencies

- Work performed is in a busy, close and; at times, noisy environment where interruptions may exist
- Ability to interact with the public in a positive and professional manner in possibly stressful and emotionally charged situations

- Ability to lift, carry or transport objects up to 50 lbs unassisted

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Requires major course work in recreation or related field from an accredited college/university
- Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in the parks and recreation field, including fitness program management/administration. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience supervising fitness and wellness staff
- Proficiency with computers, Microsoft office software applications, and recreation software programs
- Excellent internal and external customer service skills
- Ability to multitask, problem solve, and create and maintain a respectful, welcoming, and friendly environment for customers and employees
- Must be willing to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays
- CPR and First Aid certifications upon hire
- Possession of current ACSM, ACE, or other nationally recognized fitness certification (personal training or group fitness) upon hire
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) Certification
- Variety of current fitness and wellness certifications, such as group fitness, personal training, yoga, Pilates, cycling, aquatics, or other relevant specialty certifications, and/or experience in a supervisory capacity
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience supervising full-time staff
