What You Will Do :
Guidehouse seeks a Public Health Medical Officer (Dentist) to support the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other federal public health agencies. The successful candidate will be a nationally recognized dental public health leader with extensive experience supporting CDC scientific programs, oral health surveillance, epidemiology, research, policy development, and public health partnerships. This individual will provide senior scientific and technical leadership for oral health research, surveillance, program evaluation, health services research, and evidence-based disease prevention initiatives, while serving as a trusted advisor to federal leaders, researchers, public health professionals, and external stakeholders. The role requires deep expertise in translating scientific evidence into public health action, guiding complex federal research and surveillance activities, and advancing national oral health priorities through collaboration, innovation, and scientific excellence.
Responsibilities include:
- Provide expert scientific, clinical, epidemiologic, and dental public health consultation for CDC research, surveillance, program evaluation, health-risk assessment, guideline review, policy development, and disease prevention initiatives.
- Design, direct, and evaluate complex research studies, surveillance systems, and public health programs; develop innovative approaches for collecting, analyzing, and applying oral health and population health data to address critical public health priorities
- Serve as a senior advisor and liaison to CDC Centers, other federal agencies, state and local health departments, academic institutions, professional organizations, and external partners to advance oral health objectives and scientific collaboration.
- Provide technical consultation for grants, cooperative agreements, and other federally funded public health activities, including protocol development, research review, study implementation, and program performance assessment.
- Lead development of scientific publications, technical reports, executive briefings, presentations, and policy recommendations; communicate complex research findings to scientific, professional, governmental, and public audiences.
- Enhance scientific rigor, regulatory compliance, and adherence to federal research requirements, including Institutional Review Board (IRB), Office of Management and Budget (OMB), data quality, and scientific integrity standards.
- Provide thought leadership in oral health surveillance, dental public health, disease prevention, and population health while fostering collaboration across multidisciplinary teams and public health stakeholders.
What You Will Need :
- Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) from an accredited institution.
- Current, unrestricted professional dental license in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
- Master of Public Health (MPH), Doctor of Public Health (DrPH), PhD in a relevant public health discipline, or a closely related advanced degree.
- Current Diplomate status with the American Board of Dental Public Health, or an equivalent current specialty credential in dental public health.
- At least six years of relevant professional experience in dental public health, oral-health epidemiology, surveillance, public health research, health services research, scientific program leadership, or a directly related field.
- Substantial documented experience working within or directly supporting CDC, another HHS operating division, or a comparable federal public health entity.
- Demonstrated leadership of complex oral-health surveillance, epidemiologic research, or population-health measurement activities.
- Experience providing scientific direction for public health research, surveillance, health services research, program evaluation, protocol development, guideline review, and policy analysis.
- Demonstrated experience advising senior federal public health officials or comparable executive scientific leaders.
- Experience establishing and directing collaborations across federal programs, state and local health departments, academic institutions, professional associations, and nongovernmental organizations.
- Demonstrated record of authoring or coauthoring peer-reviewed scientific publications in oral health, dental public health, epidemiology, surveillance, health services research, or a closely related discipline.
- Experience presenting scientific findings to national professional, scientific, governmental, or public health audiences.
- Experience reviewing or overseeing IRB-related research protocols and federal information-collection requirements.
- Experience providing scientific oversight or consultation for grants, cooperative agreements, contracts, or other extramural public health activities.
- Demonstrated ability to translate scientific findings into policy, programmatic, clinical, or public health recommendations.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a federal Public Trust clearance.
What Would Be Nice To Have :
- Senior leadership experience within a CDC oral-health, chronic-disease prevention, surveillance, or scientific program.
- Experience directing an organizational unit or national portfolio responsible for programmatic and scientific oral-health activities.
- Experience leading a multidisciplinary surveillance, investigations, and research function.
- Experience directing or providing senior oversight to an accredited or federally sponsored dental public health residency or comparable professional-development program.
- National leadership experience establishing, monitoring, or evaluating population-level oral-health objectives and indicators.
- Demonstrated expertise in national oral-health surveillance and the use of population-level data to monitor disease burden, disparities, and progress toward public health objectives.
- Experience representing an oral-health program on enterprise or cross-agency committees addressing health disparities, health equity, social determinants of health, chronic disease, maternal and child health, or related public health priorities.
- Recognition by national public health, dental, scientific, or professional organizations for contributions to oral-health research, surveillance, policy, leadership, or practice.
- Appointment or selection as a senior scholar, fellow, advisor, board member, or comparable expert by a nationally recognized oral-health or public health organization.
- Experience integrating scientific programs with policy, partnerships, workforce development, and public communication strategies.
- Established professional relationships across CDC programs, governmental public health agencies, dental public health organizations, and academic research institutions.
- A sustained record of scientific leadership demonstrating influence on oral-health surveillance, national public health objectives, research priorities, or public health policy.
