About this role

Tesla's Cell Engineering Factory Programs team is seeking an experienced engineer to serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for mechanical and process infrastructure across our 4680 cell manufacturing factories. This is a key technical leadership role at the core of our global capacity expansion, where you'll define, own, and scale the complete infrastructure ecosystem that enables high-volume, high-reliability battery production.

This is primarily a hands-on technical role, with opportunities to build and mentor a small engineering team as the group grows. You will be the primary authority for factory infrastructure engineering excellence, covering Mechanical Systems and Process Systems such as HVAC, utility distribution, environmental control, dust collection, and building mechanical systems; hydronic loops (process cooling water, RO/DI water, hot oil); process gases (N₂, compressed air); electrolyte supply; and chemical utility systems.

Your work will directly impact facility performance, uptime, and scalability, making you a critical enabler of Tesla's cell manufacturing roadmap. You'll serve as the primary factory engineering authority, setting technical standards, reviewing design packages, and leading front-end conceptual design for new and existing facilities worldwide.

- Define and own mechanical (HVAC, utilities, environmental) and process (hydronics, gases, electrolyte) system standards, layouts, and specifications for new and existing facilities
- Review and approve P&IDs, schematics, and 3D models (Revit), applying first principles to size critical components such as chillers, pumps, compressors, and heat exchangers
- Lead lifecycle delivery from concept to commissioning, partnering with EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) teams to resolve issues and ensure design intent
- Conduct cost-benefit analyses for centralized vs. localized utility solutions and continuously improve internal standards based on operational data
- Ensure all designs meet regional codes, safety protocols, and permitting requirements across global jurisdictions

- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical, Process, or Chemical Engineering, or equivalent experience
- 10+ years of experience in large-scale facility infrastructure (battery, semiconductor, or chemical), including cleanroom/dryroom design
- Proven expertise in both mechanical building systems and process utilities (hydronics, gases, chemical supply)
- Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, and system modeling tools (AFT Pipeflo, Aspen HYSYS, or equivalent)
- Ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders and suppliers, and to lead with clear, data-driven technical arguments
