About this role
IT accelerates the success of IDEXX employees and customers by providing scalable and innovative solutions and leadership. We are a global organization that supports all technology needed to deliver products and solutions to customers enabling them to focus on delivering high quality patient care. We strive to provide exceptional customer service and experience in the most efficient means possible, requiring alignment and cross-functional communication.
The Associate Director, Enterprise Architecture will shape and govern IDEXX’s enterprise technology ecosystem, aligning target-state architecture across core platforms, including ERP, CRM, commercial diagnostic platforms, laboratory information systems (LIMS), cloud data platforms, and integration layers. Working closely with the Senior Director, Enterprise Architecture & AI, this role establishes the visibility, standards, and future-state direction IDEXX needs to make coordinated technology decisions across its business units, standing up the foundational capabilities of a new EA practice: an enterprise-wide architecture inventory, business capability maps, and the principles and standards that turn a future-state vision into practical guidance for delivery teams.
The role carries no direct reports, but coordinates a Center of Excellence of domain and solution architects across IDEXX’s business lines who contribute a portion of their time to enterprise architecture, without formal reporting authority over them. This person will operate with a high degree of autonomy, setting priorities and driving outcomes independently while keeping leadership informed.
In This Role, you will…
- Build and maintain the enterprise architecture inventory in Ardoq, applications, owners, costs, risks, and lifecycle status, establishing the architecture visibility IDEXX currently lacks.
- Develop business capability maps that connect IDEXX’s technology landscape to the value it creates, providing the business context needed to prioritize investment.
- Define future-state architecture and the principles, standards, and exception process that translate that vision into actionable guidance for delivery teams.
- Embed enterprise architecture into the Software Realization Framework (SRF), chairing a lightweight Architecture Review Board that operates through SRF checkpoints rather than as a separate approval gate, so architectural input shapes Tier 1 initiatives before funding and direction are committed.
- Partner with the EA Center of Excellence, domain and solution architects across Reference Labs, Commercial, VetSoft, Diagnostics, and VetConnect+, to align enterprise standards with delivery reality and champion shared foundations (data standards, integration patterns, identity management) that move IDEXX from a Diversification model toward Coordination with selective Unification.
- Lead ongoing application portfolio rationalization as the inventory and standards mature, retiring redundant systems, decoupling legacy monoliths, and optimizing total cost of ownership.
- Mentor and develop the architects across the Center of Excellence, sharing practices and building enterprise architecture capability across the organization, without formal reporting authority over them.
- Communicate architecture direction, trade-offs, and progress clearly to both delivery teams and senior leadership, including the Senior Leadership Team as needed.
- Track and report the measurable outcomes of the EA practice, reduced rework, reduced duplicate systems, and faster delivery, tying architecture activity to business results rather than volume of documents produced.
What You Need to Succeed
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
- 10+ years of progressive experience in IT/software engineering, solutions design, and enterprise architecture.
- Proven experience establishing architecture roadmaps across multi-cloud environments (AWS, Azure, and/or GCP).
- Practical knowledge of industry EA frameworks (TOGAF, Zachman, or equivalent) paired with a pragmatic, delivery-focused mindset (Agile, DevOps, product-mode operating models).
- Demonstrated experience building or significantly maturing an enterprise architecture practice within a complex, multi-business-unit organization.
- Hands-on experience implementing an EA or application portfolio management tool (Ardoq, LeanIX, Avolution, Mega, or similar), configuring inventories, capability maps, and integrations.
- A track record of influencing without authority across a matrixed organization, building alignment among architects and stakeholders who do not report to them.
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate business impact, financial ROI, and complex technical trade-offs to C-suite and VP-level stakeholders.
- Experience establishing lightweight architecture governance embedded within existing delivery processes, balancing decision rights and guardrails against delivery speed rather than adding a separate approval gate.
Preferred skills...
- Direct experience with Ardoq.
- Background in healthcare, diagnostics, veterinary, or another multi-platform B2B/B2C organization.
- Experience operating in an organization that grew through acquisition, including the architectural patchwork that typically results.
- Exposure to how AI initiatives consume enterprise data, identity, and integration foundations.
- TOGAF, AWS/Azure Certified Solutions Architect Professional, or equivalent certifications.
- Experience building standards, principles, or governance processes from the ground up in a growing practice.
