About this role
Mission
TAR’s mission is to power intelligence for the world. We are building the world’s first off-grid power plant for data centers powered by renewable technologies.
We firmly believe AI should be built in the US for the benefit of all people. For that, power must be fast, clean and scalable. We are singularly focused on delivering GW-scale power faster than anyone has ever done, by rethinking every layer of the stack.
We vertically integrate to solve every bottleneck, from racking systems to power electronics to dispatch algorithms to on-site construction.
Leave your mark on the future of civilization-scale energy infrastructure.
Company
TAR is both a hardware and software company, we are building out massive, critical, physical infrastructure. TAR is working directly with one of the largest compute providers to scale and deploy 5GWs by 2028.
We operate on…
- High ownership. High Agency. Own project end-to-end. Great people don’t need to be managed.
- Speed. We achieve great things on incredible timelines. We push ourselves to go faster.
- First principles. No ego. No hierarchy. Challenge every assumption.
- Passion. Solving the energy problem is one of the largest challenges that faces the world now and in the future.
About the role
TAR's off-grid power plants are built from PV, battery storage, and power conversion equipment that must carry data center load with no utility grid behind it. The technology choices we make, and how well we integrate them, determine whether those plants perform.
As Technology Solutions Engineer, you own the technical evaluation and integration of the power systems technologies that go into TAR's plants: PV, BESS, inverters and power conversion systems, and the LV and MV equipment that ties them together. You will take a technology from first vendor conversation through specification, qualification, and field deployment, and give design and project teams a clear answer on what to build with, how to integrate it, and what risk comes with it. You will partner closely with Power Systems design, procurement, and project delivery, while retaining ownership of technology recommendations and the technical specifications behind them. Detailed design of record and construction execution sit with design and project teams; your work defines the equipment and architecture they build on.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate PV, BESS, inverter, and power conversion technologies from established and emerging vendors, benchmarking performance, efficiency, reliability, cost, and bankability to deliver clear recommendations on what TAR deploys.
- Develop system architectures and conceptual designs for PV-plus-storage plants, including DC and AC block configurations, LV and MV collection, single-line diagrams, and grounding concepts, built for the reliability demands of off-grid data center loads.
- Write technical specifications, RFP technical scope, and evaluation criteria for modules, batteries, PCS and inverters, transformers, and MV switchgear, and lead technical review of vendor proposals, submittals, and deviations.
- Model and validate system performance, including energy yield, equipment sizing , protection philosophy and code compliance of new systems.
- Analyze power electronics behavior, including inverter controls, grid-forming operation, harmonics, transient response, and protection coordination, and translate findings into equipment and system requirements for islanded operation.
- Lead factory acceptance testing, pilot deployments, and field validation of new technologies, and feed results back into specifications and standard designs.
- Own the technical relationship with equipment manufacturers, resolving integration issues quickly and pushing vendor products and roadmaps toward TAR's requirements.
- Build and maintain technology roadmaps, reference designs, and equipment standards for Power Systems so every project starts from proven, qualified building blocks.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering; MS in Electrical Engineering with a focus on power systems or power electronics strongly preferred.
- 2-3 years of engineering experience on PV and/or BESS projects or products, at any scale: residential, C&I, utility-scale, or microgrid.
- Working knowledge of power electronics, including inverter and converter topologies, PCS operation, and their control and protection behavior.
- Hands-on LV and MV design experience: single-line diagrams, equipment and conductor sizing, grounding, and protection.
- Familiarity with relevant codes and standards, such as NEC, IEEE 1547 and 2800, UL 1741 and 9540, and NFPA 855.
- Proficiency with at least one power systems or PV/BESS modeling tool, such as PVsyst, ETAP, PSCAD, MATLAB/Simulink, or Python.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently: you can take an open technical question, define the analysis, and deliver a defensible recommendation without step-by-step direction.
- Clear written and verbal communication, with the ability to explain technical tradeoffs plainly to engineers, vendors, and leadership.
- Ability to work from Austin or San Francisco, with travel to vendor facilities and project sites.
Nice to have
- Experience with grid-forming inverters, microgrids, or islanded and off-grid power systems.
- Exposure to data center electrical infrastructure or other large, critical loads.
- OEM, integrator, or vendor-side experience with inverters, batteries, or power conversion equipment.
- Hands-on factory acceptance testing or field commissioning experience.
