The system includes full-complex recreation centers, swimming pools, golf courses, sports fields and numerous small-to-medium-sized clubhouses that offer a variety of sports- and arts-related recreation programs for people of all ages.  Included in the Department’s responsibilities are Golden Gate Park, Coit Tower, the Marina Yacht Harbor, the San Francisco Zoo and Lake Merced.

Job Description

As part of Mayor Lurie’s Family Opportunity Agenda to make San Francisco more welcoming for families, Mayor Lurie is expanding access to affordable after-school care for San Francisco families, building on the City’s major expansion of early childcare.

Under the general direction of the Superintendent of Recreation and Community Services, the 0922 Manager I will lead the expansion of after‑school opportunities by over 20% across 19 Recreation & Park sites, providing nearly 650 total spots for youth to access homework support, enrichment activities, and safe, supportive environments. The position will also manage facilities, programs, and summer day camps to ensure these services align with departmental goals and overall project.

Important and Essential Duties:

- Provide leadership and support in the expansion of enrichment activities and homework support structure and address operational challenges as they arise.
- Assess site needs to accommodate the expanded capacity and maintain project timelines to ensure all sites are ready for implementation.
- Lead and direct staff including supervisors, coordinators and specialists and manage staffing plans to ensure adequate coverage across all sites.
- Prepare, execute and monitor expenditure of the annual budget; provide oversight of the purchase of equipment and supplies.
- Collect program data and feedback, analyze performance outcomes, and recommend improvements to strengthen program quality and effectiveness.
- Collaborate with internal divisions, schools, community organizations to enhance services; represent the Department at meetings, conferences, and partner engagements.
- Manage facilities operations, programs, and summer day camps to ensure services are delivered efficiently, safely, and in alignment with the expanded after-school initiatives.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Possession of a Bachelor's degree; AND

Experience: Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience supervising employees engaged in the planning/implementation of a broad range of recreational activities; AND

License:  Possession of a valid California Driver's License at the time of appointment

Substitution:  Additional experience as described above may be substituted for the required degree on a year for year basis. One (1) year is equivalent to thirty (30) semester units / forty-five (45) quarter units.

Desirable Qualifications:

- Experience providing recreation programs, services and outreach to underserved and marginalized communities.
- Experience managing recreation programs and services to transitional aged youth.
- Experience/Competence: Progressively responsible experience, and accomplished results demonstrating positive organizational impact.
- Strong, astute leader and communicator who can align the department’s vision and values by inspiring, advising and facilitating goal accomplishment.
- Demonstrated expertise in successful team-building by developing direction and structure for subordinates to facilitate accomplishment of identified goals.
- Solid experience in managing work groups by instructing and advising staff, assigning and delegating workload and tracking and evaluating performance.

Additional Information

Appointment Type:   Full-time.  Permanent Exempt appointment (up to 3 years).  This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer.
