Job Description:
The Principal Engineer-Failure Analysis leads package and material analysis operations by providing strategic direction, driving operational excellence, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives. The role oversees resource management, team development, and readiness for emerging technologies and advanced analytical methods.
Key responsibilities include leading cross-functional efforts to resolve complex failure analysis and material-related issues, managing stakeholder relationships, mitigating operational risks, and representing the team in technical discussions, yield improvement programs, and project initiatives. As a subject matter expert, the position provides technical leadership in chemical analysis and data interpretation using techniques such as SEM/EDX, FTIR, XPS, and surface material analysis, while also guiding chemical solution formulation for decapsulation and deprocessing activities.
The role additionally ensures compliance with RA 10657 – Chemistry Profession Act and related regulations by overseeing chemical laboratory operations, supervising chemical handling procedures, and maintaining adherence to safety and regulatory standards.
Requirements/Qualifications:
Education Level
Graduate of BS Chemistry or MS Chemistry
PRC Licensed Chemist
Working experience
- Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in the semiconductor or electronics manufacturing industry, with strong background in Quality and Reliability, Failure Analysis, and Product or Process Engineering.
- Must maintain a valid PRC Chemist license throughout employment in this position.
- Demonstrated proficiency in chemical safety, chemical handling, and material analysis methodologies.
- Strong working knowledge of RA 10657 – Chemistry Profession Act and its Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR).
- Recognized subject matter expert in various material analysis techniques and analytical methodologies.
- Specific duties and Responsibilities:
- Consistently manage, monitor, and execute performance improvement initiatives to ensure operational excellence in chemical laboratory operations and material analysis activities.
- Define strategic technical direction and make critical decisions to achieve departmental and organizational goals.
- Lead, motivate, and develop the team by identifying training needs and driving continuous improvement and high-performance culture.
- Develop and implement advanced failure analysis methodologies and techniques.
- Manage stakeholder relationships effectively while proactively identifying, mitigating, and resolving potential risks.
- Lead and drive task forces and cross-functional teams in resolving complex material and failure analysis cases.
- Mentor and coach team members across all levels by providing technical training and identifying development opportunities to strengthen overall team capability and competency.
- Actively participate in and represent the team during cross-functional meetings, projects, yield improvement initiatives, and critical discussions involving failure analysis results.
- Fulfill the responsibilities of a Chemistry professional in accordance with RA 10657 – Chemistry Profession Act and its Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR).
- Serve as the focal Failure Analysis (FA) Laboratory Safety Officer responsible for chemical safety management, chemical waste handling, pollution control, and related compliance activities.
- Establish and implement appropriate procedures and safety controls for all chemical-related laboratory activities to ensure compliance with government regulations and MCHP quality certification standards.
- Oversee the operations and supervision of the FA chemical laboratory and all FA processes involving chemical handling and applications.
- Act as the subject matter expert in chemical analysis procedures and data interpretation, including SEM/EDX, surface material analysis, FTIR, XPS, and related techniques, as well as provide guidance in formulating chemical solutions for FA decapsulation and deprocessing activities.
- Provide technical expertise and support to other MCHP operations, including Facilities, involving chemical handling, storage, and analysis as required.
- Collaborate with local and global Failure Analysis engineering teams across Microchip sites to develop and enhance failure analysis techniques and capabilities.
- Partner with Customer Quality, Product Engineering, Fab, Assembly, and Design Engineering teams to resolve product and package-related failure analysis concerns.
- Prepare and deliver comprehensive Failure Analysis reports based on analytical findings and investigation results.
- Support the training, mentoring, and development of FA engineers and technicians.
