Job Summary
The Intern will support various aspects of the construction process related to underground utility construction. This role provides hands-on experience in the planning and project management of wet and dry utilities for public and commercial projects, including water, sewer, gas, electrical, and telecommunications systems. The Intern will support project managers and superintendents while gaining practical experience and learning industry standards and practices.
This is a 12-week, full-time summer internship from May 17, 2027 through August 6, 2027.
Key Responsibilities
- Work with project management teams and superintendents to assist with planning, scheduling, and managing projects in accordance with contract documents.
- Assist in the development of work plans and site safety plans.
- Review plans and specifications to assist with material selection, procurement, and tracking.
- Compile data and documentation to assist in preparing change orders for submission to project owners.
- Work closely with project managers, superintendents, estimators, clients, subcontractors, and vendors throughout various aspects of the project.
- Follow applicable safety procedures and standards, including requirements related to trench safety, traffic control, and environmental regulations.
- Work closely with the project management team to compile and submit monthly billings to project owners.
Skills and Qualifications
- Currently enrolled as a sophomore or junior pursuing an undergraduate or master’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, or a related field, with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Ability to work full-time during the summer.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Strong work ethic and attention to detail.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to think critically and solve problems.
- Strong time management and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Ability to work effectively both collaboratively in a team environment and independently.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous internship experience in construction, engineering, or a utility-related field.
- Familiarity with safety regulations and practices related to construction or utility work.
- Basic understanding of wet and dry underground utility systems, including water, sewer, gas, electrical, and telecommunications.
Work Environment
- The position involves a combination of office-based work and visits to active construction sites.
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required while on construction sites. Hard hat, gloves, and safety vest are provided. Steel-toed boots or shoes are required.
