Senior Accountant

Purpose

The Senior Accountant is responsible for supporting the organizations accounting and financial reporting activities, including general ledger accounting, financial statement preparation, account reconciliations, audit support, financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and project financial performance. This position works closely with Accounting and Finance leadership to ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial information, compliance with applicable accounting standards, and timely reporting to support business operations and management decision-making.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Assist with the monthly financial close processes, including preparation of journal entries, schedules and supporting documentation.

- Record, review, verify and consolidate financial transactions to ensure the accuracy and completeness of accounting records.

- Prepare general ledger and balance sheet account reconciliations monthly. Investigate and resolve any discrepancies.

- Prepare financial analyses and cost justifications for capital expenditure requests and ensure proper capitalization of expenditures in compliance with company policies.

- Maintain the fixed asset register and assist with fixed asset additions and disposals.

- Prepare fixed asset rollforwards and support monthly.

- Prepare and analyze monthly financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and other internal financial reports.

- Ensure accounting activities and financial reporting comply with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), company policies, and applicable regulatory requirements.

- Assist in the preparation of monthly financial metrics and management reports.

- Support budgeting and forecasting activities by compiling, analyzing, and validating financial data and assumptions.

- Support the annual external audit, including preparation of audit schedules, workpapers, financial statements, and requested supporting documentation.

- Assist with internal, government, and regulatory audits, including DCAA and DCMA reviews, as applicable.

- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, internal controls, reporting accuracy, and operational efficiency.

- Maintain confidentiality of financial, employee, customer, and other sensitive company information.

- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Strong working knowledge of U.S. GAAP and generally accepted accounting practices and principles.

- Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, financial statement preparation, account reconciliations, and financial close processes.

- Demonstrated financial analysis, forecasting, financial modeling, and cost accounting skills.

- Ability to analyze complex financial information, identify trends and discrepancies, and communicate findings effectively.

- Strong attention to detail with demonstrated ability to produce accurate financial reports and work products.

- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet stringent deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

- Ability to exercise sound judgment and initiative when addressing complex or ambiguous financial matters.

- Strong problem-solving, analytical, organizational, and critical-thinking skills.

- Ability to work independently while effectively collaborating with Finance, Accounting, program teams, and other business functions.

- Strong service orientation and ability to effectively support internal business partners.

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

- Demonstrated discretion and ability to appropriately handle confidential and sensitive information.

- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and proficiency in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.

- Experience with enterprise resource planning (ERP) and accounting systems required; NetSuite experience preferred.

- High level of personal and professional integrity.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

- Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.

- Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible accounting or finance experience required.

- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation or Master of Business Administration (MBA) preferred.

- Public accounting experience preferred.

- Experience supporting internal and external audits preferred.

- Experience working with DCAA, DCMA, or other government audit or regulatory organizations preferred.

- Experience within government contracting, aviation, aerospace, defense, or a similarly regulated environment preferred.

Physical Requirements

- Ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods while performing computer-based work.

- Ability to frequently operate a computer and other standard office equipment.

- Ability to communicate effectively with employees, management, auditors, customers, and other business partners in person, by telephone, and through electronic communication.

- Ability to occasionally move or lift office materials and equipment weighing up to 20 pounds.

Work Environment

- Work is primarily performed in a professional office environment.

- The position routinely uses standard office equipment, including computers, telephones, and other electronic devices.

- The role requires regular interaction and collaboration with Accounting, Finance, operational departments, management, auditors, and other internal and external stakeholders.

- The position may require additional or extended working hours during month-end and year-end close, budgeting and forecasting cycles, audits, and other periods of increased business activity.

- The employee may occasionally be exposed to operational or aviation-related environments when business needs require.
