Primary Role
The DHTS Developer is responsible for quality assurance, validation, and release readiness of analytics-ready data assets in Microsoft Fabric. This role focuses on ensuring lakehouse, warehouse, pipeline, notebook, and semantic model solutions are accurate, complete, reliable, and fit for trusted reporting in Power BI.
Key responsibilities include developing QA strategies, test plans, test cases, validation queries, reconciliation procedures, and acceptance criteria for Fabric data pipelines, lakehouse and warehouse tables, curated data products, Power BI semantic models, measures, and reports. The role performs source-to-target validation, regression testing, data profiling, defect triage, and quality evidence review to support governed analytics delivery.
The ideal candidate should have experience with Microsoft Fabric concepts, Power BI semantic model validation, SQL-based testing, data profiling, data reconciliation, defect management, QA documentation, Git/GitHub or Azure DevOps, deployment pipelines, and collaborative practices that ensure analytics solutions meet business, technical, and data quality expectations before production release.
Level 1 Work Performed, at a minimum
- Individual contributor works under the direct supervision of level 3 or above and collaborates as a member of a team
- Basic understanding of enterprise source systems, Microsoft Fabric concepts, Power BI reporting, and the data used by the assigned role or domain
- Basic understanding of ETL technologies and scripting languages and terminology related to role
- Basic understanding of Microsoft Fabric QA concepts, including OneLake, lakehouses, warehouses, notebooks, data pipelines, Delta tables, semantic models, validation testing, regression testing, and data quality checks
- Ability to execute and document QA test cases for Fabric data assets under guidance of senior team members, including validation of row counts, completeness, data rules, transformations, semantic model calculations, and expected report results
- Assists with monitoring Fabric pipeline runs, refresh results, validation outputs, and data quality findings to support timely identification and communication of issues
- Basic knowledge of SQL and relational databases
- Follows all policies and procedures set forth by DUHS/DHTS/ACE as pertains to role
- Responds to customer requests for assistance as assigned and prioritized by manager
- Participates in QA reviews, test evidence reviews, defect discussions, and learning best practices in Fabric validation, semantic model testing, and data quality assurance
- Maintains ongoing communications (timely, clear, concise, and accurate) with manager keeping them apprised of request status
- Maintains appropriate QA and production support documentation, such as test plans, test cases, validation results, defect logs, release notes, data dictionaries, lineage notes, and supporting evidence
Level 2 Work Performed, at a minimum
- Meets all Competencies in Level 1 AND:
- Works with new hires/Level I team members to train on use of tools and technologies to accomplish job duties
- Demonstrates advanced knowledge of the assigned domain/role. Understands data, workflows, and tools related to role.
- Demonstrates advanced knowledge of Microsoft Fabric QA and validation concepts, including OneLake, Lakehouse, Warehouse, notebooks, data pipelines, Delta tables, Direct Lake, semantic models, deployment pipelines, lineage, data reconciliation, and medallion-style data architecture.
- Works with stakeholders to understand business definitions, reporting expectations, data quality concerns, and acceptance criteria independently >75% of the time.
- Develops QA requirements, test scenarios, validation criteria, expected results, and test evidence requirements from business and technical requirements independently >75% of the time.
- Can write/modify accurate SQL queries independently >90% of the time
- Ability to optimize SQL queries, stored procedures and scripts for performance reliability
- Can write complex SQL inclusion/exclusion criteria for cohort development
- Reviews Fabric workspace assets, pipeline runs, refresh results, validation outputs, and semantic model changes to identify data quality, performance, completeness, and release readiness concerns
- Investigates, documents, and supports resolution of complex Fabric pipeline, notebook, lakehouse, warehouse, semantic model, data refresh, and QA validation issues
- Ability to locate data elements independently >75% of the time
- Knowledge and utilization of Fabric data validation, semantic model testing, quality assurance practices, lineage review, defect tracking, and release management practices
- Participates in team code review
- Leads assigned data QA activities, including profiling, reconciliation, defect triage, source-to-target validation, regression testing, semantic model review, report result validation, and requests for new tables, attributes, measures, or business logic changes
- Actively seeks out participation in Special Projects and is able to effectively accomplish project assignments with minimal supervision
- Ability to manage multiple projects to completion in a timely manner
- Ability to develop and present topics as assigned/needed by customer and/or ACE team
- Active participation in Duke Analytic Community or other networking forums applicable to job functions
Level 3 Work Performed, at a minimum
- Meets all Competencies in Level 2 AND:
- Demonstrates expertise in systems and software related to Microsoft Fabric, Power BI semantic models, SQL validation, notebooks, data pipelines, deployment pipelines, source control, defect tracking, and QA automation to accomplish job duties
- Resolves or coordinates resolution of escalated QA findings and incidents to ensure data accuracy, completeness, reliability, and trustworthiness of Fabric pipelines, semantic models, and Power BI reporting assets
- Architects and designs robust data solutions
- Expert knowledge and experience with Microsoft Fabric QA, Power BI semantic model validation, enterprise KPI/business logic validation, data quality controls, automated reconciliation, regression testing, and industry best practices for governed analytics delivery.
- Expert locating data elements as required. Assists team in locating data elements as needed.
- Works with team members to train on advanced skills in using tools and technologies to accomplish job duties
- Leads QA planning and validation for complex Fabric data pipelines, notebooks, lakehouse/warehouse structures, semantic models, reusable measures, and Power BI reports, ensuring accuracy, maintainability, and alignment with approved data definitions
- Defines standards and best practices for Fabric QA strategy, validation queries, test evidence, data reconciliation, semantic model review, deployment readiness, defect management, monitoring, and production support handoff
- Demonstrates ability to work independently to solve problems and complete assigned work >95% of the time
- Demonstrates ability to work with customers to understand business need or problem to address independently >95% of the time
- Leads Projects with minimal supervision
- Change agent with regard to team processes and workflows when issues or gaps are found
- Collaborates with data architects, analytics developers, QA partners, and business stakeholders on validation strategy, acceptance criteria, defect resolution, and release readiness for Fabric data solutions, including lakehouse, warehouse, and semantic model assets
- Serves as moderator, leader, or channel owner for a forum such as Duke Analytics Community or other professional networking organization

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Bachelor's degree in a related field, or four years of equivalent technical experience required.
Licensure / Certification
None required. Preferred certification in development technologies, as appropriate for the position.
Experience
Level 1 - No experience required beyond the minimum education (or equivalency) requirement.
Level 2 - Two years of directly related experience is required.
Level 3 - Four years of directly related experience is required.
