Position Summary

As a Safety Coordinator, you will deliver specialized safety, crisis intervention, and de-escalation services to maintain a safe, welcoming, and respectful environment for clients, staff, volunteers, and visitors at the CCS Basic Needs – Salt Lake (BN-SL) campus. Using a trauma-informed approach focused on prevention, engagement, and intervention, and the credentials earned through the CCS Safety Academy, you will independently assess and respond to behavioral health crises, overdoses, medical emergencies, and safety threats. You will often serve as the primary safety responder on site and are accountable for safety response and incident documentation during your assigned shift.

Key Responsibilities

- Conduct facility patrols and monitor building entrances, exits, and client areas, identifying and addressing emerging safety risks.

- Respond to safety concerns, enforce facility rules, and investigate safety-related incidents.

- Assess and respond to conflicts and escalating or disruptive client behavior using CPI de-escalation techniques. Encourage compliance through communication before enforcement, and determine appropriate interventions within CCS safety protocols.

- Provide crisis support to individuals experiencing emotional distress, mental health crises, or intoxication, applying Mental Health First Aid and QPR suicide prevention practices.

- Independently assess behavioral health crises, overdoses, medical emergencies, safety threats, property damage, and evacuation situations; determine when to engage law enforcement, EMS, or crisis services; and coordinate on-scene response.

- Provide emergency medical response, including naloxone administration, CPR/AED, First Aid, and bleeding control, in accordance with Safety Academy certifications.

- Provide rapid response to support employees during escalating situations, and support day-to-day program operations.

- Build rapport with regular clients, including high-utilizer clients, and act as an ambassador for CCS programs. Work with shelter staff and case managers to connect clients with resources and resolve issues before they escalate, without removal or police involvement whenever possible.

- Produce accurate incident documentation that meets standards for program compliance, insurance, and law enforcement use.

- Report facility hazards, maintenance needs, and biohazard materials to the Property Team for follow-up.

- Perform other duties as assigned.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

- This position is based at the CCS Basic Needs – Salt Lake (BN-SL) campus. It involves regular walking, standing, and facility patrols both indoors and outdoors, in all seasons and weather conditions, along with the ability to respond quickly to safety concerns and emergencies across campus buildings and grounds.

- This role requires the physical ability to perform CPR and other emergency medical response, including kneeling, bending, and sustained physical exertion; to lift, carry, or assist in moving individuals or objects as needed during an emergency; and to stand, walk, and patrol for extended periods across a shift.

- This position regularly interacts with individuals experiencing homelessness, mental illness, substance use, and trauma. It requires the ability to remain calm, apply a trauma-informed approach, and de-escalate difficult situations. De-escalation may require the use of personal safety and safe escort techniques; this role does not carry weapons or use restraint equipment. The pace can be fast-moving and unpredictable, with frequent shifts between routine duties and emergency response.

Qualifications

- Required Qualifications

- High school diploma or GED required.

- At least one year of experience in security, behavioral health, human services, crisis response, EMS, corrections, military service, or a related field, including direct public interaction, independent judgment, and response to high-stress or crisis situations.

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

- Ability to remain calm and professional in stressful or rapidly changing situations.

- Ability to work respectfully and effectively with diverse populations, including individuals experiencing homelessness, mental illness, and substance use disorders.

- Preferred Qualifications

- Experience working with vulnerable populations.

- Current certification in CPI, Mental Health First Aid, or CPR/AED at the time of hire.

Additional Requirements

- Must pass a national BCI/FBI background check.

- Must complete the CCS Safety Academy training program (including CPI de-escalation, trauma-informed care, Mental Health First Aid, QPR suicide prevention, Naloxone administration, CPR/AED/First Aid, and Stop the Bleed) within 90-days of hire, and complete recertification as required.

- This position is scheduled to work 40 hours per week on one of three fixed schedules:

Shift A: Tuesday through Saturday, 6:45 AM to 3:15 PM

- Shift B: Sunday through Thursday, 11:00 AM to 7:30 PM

- Shift C: Saturday through Wednesday, 11:00 AM to 7:30 PM

- Shift D: Monday through Friday, 11:00 AM to 7:30 PM

- Shift E: Sunday through Thursday, 6:45 AM to 3:15 PM
