About this role
Criminally Obsessed is seeking a creative, story-driven Editor to produce daily true-crime news and analysis content for the Criminally Obsessed Daily Show. This role combines strong editorial judgment, advanced video editing, and a deep understanding of digital audience behavior to turn raw footage and scripts into compelling, platform-ready episodes.
The Editor partners closely with producers, talent, and the broader production team to deliver accurate, visually engaging content for video, audio, social, and broadcast platforms. The ideal candidate works quickly without sacrificing quality, understands pacing and retention, and brings strong instincts for visual storytelling.
Key Responsibilities:
- Participate in content strategy sessions, pitch social-first true-crime ideas, and stay current on relevant cases, creators, trends, and platform updates.
- Research assigned stories and organize editorial, archival, video, audio, and graphic assets for production.
- Edit scripts, interviews, A-roll, B-roll, and supporting materials into polished Daily Show segments for digital, social, and broadcast platforms.
- Shape each episode’s pacing, visual storytelling, sound, graphics, and overall flow to maximize audience engagement and retention.
- Create motion graphics, lower thirds, full screens, thumbnails, captions, and other branded social assets using Adobe Creative Suite and related tools.
- Review recordings and technical setups; identify, correct, or escalate video, audio, lighting, framing, and other production issues.
- Ensure all content is accurate, properly attributed, visually consistent, and compliant with editorial, legal, and technical standards.
- Deliver clean first cuts, incorporate feedback efficiently, and complete final episodes, time codes, uploads, and other deliverables on deadline.
- Maintain organized project files and archives, and support sponsored, promotional, and other assigned content projects.
- Collaborate closely with producers, talent, and production partners; communicate proactively about creative opportunities, workflow improvements, challenges, and timing.
- Work a flexible schedule, including occasional nights, weekends, and breaking-news coverage; travel up to 10–20% and safely handle production equipment up to 25 pounds.
Qualifications:
- 5+ years hands-on experience in all aspects of video production and postproduction including shooting, lighting, sound recording & editing, and ability to operate and troubleshoot all associated equipment
- Highly skilled across Adobe Creative Suite (Premiere, Premiere Rush, Photoshop, After Effects, etc), and other creative software
- Strong understanding of video editing techniques and storytelling
- Demonstrated experience in motion graphics and creating social media video content
- Strong knowledge of YouTube and its best practices
- Proficiency in designing graphics, including thumbnails and infographics
- An eye for quality content, with an understanding of what plays well across various channels
- This position requires impeccable spelling and grammar, a deep understanding of social media trends and what works on each platform, vertical video editing skills, and the ability to capture well-composed videos on a phone
- Must be highly motivated, extremely organized, and come to the position with a uniquely creative mind
- Flexibility to travel and work nights and/or weekends, as projects call for
