About this role
The Government and Policy Sr. Fellow Program at the Johns Hopkins University School of Government and Policy is designed to integrate distinguished practitioners into the academic environment, enhancing the school's mission in research, education, and policy development. This program aims to foster a dynamic exchange between academia and practice, enriching the educational experience and advancing the school's impact on public policy discourse. GPEIRs will collaborate with faculty and students, providing practical insights and fostering connections between academic theories and real-world policy challenges.
Each Government and Policy Sr. Fellow appointed will have a bespoke focus that aligns with a research, education and/or policy project or initiative at the School of Government and Policy.
This is an appointment which is for six months per year, may be benefit-eligible and can be renewed.
Specific duties & responsibilities:
Sr. Fellows may be asked to support any of the following duties and responsibilities:
Research Collaboration:
- Work alongside faculty on research projects, serving as an intellectual bridge between academic inquiries and real-world governance and policy issues.
- Supervise and mentor students on research projects.
- Llead research projects and/or academic collaborations.
Educational Enhancement:
- Advise and develop curriculum or courses providing real-world policy experience and perspectives.
- Collaborate with faculty to design course modules that incorporate practical case studies and current policy debates.
- Enrich the curriculum by participating in or teaching lectures, seminars, and/or workshops offering students firsthand perspectives on policy implementation and governance.
- Guide and mentor students, particularly those engaged in research, impact work, capstone projects or pursuing careers in government or public policy.
- Support co-curricular activities that enhance the academic experience of students.
- Conceive of and organize events that connect students and JHU alumni around policy-specific issues that build networks within the school and throughout the university.
Policy Engagement:
- Contribute to the school's policy initiatives, serving as thought leaders or participating in the translation of research findings into actionable policy recommendations and strategies.
- Represent the school in public forums, conferences, and media engagements, sharing insights on contemporary policy issues.
- Participate in and serve as policy experts in School of Government and Policy webinars, podcasts, and articles.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Five to seven years experience in government or policy work.
- An established practitioner or leader with strong practice experience, academic and professional achievement, and a demonstrated commitment to the promotion and promise of government and policy.
- Strong ties to a government and policy community (local, regional, national or international), facilitating opportunities and building networks for collaboration and enhancing the school's national and international profile.
Preferred Qualifications
- An advanced degree preferred.
- An experienced practitioner with a record of being is responsive to emerging governmental, policy and societal needs.
- A demonstrated record of understanding and integrating evidence-based research and practical policy recommendations.
