Job Overview: Responsible for performing advanced, diversified and confidential administrative and support duties for the Tribal Government. This position will be responsible for high-level matter management, including assisting the Deputy General Legal Counsel in receiving, delegating, prioritizing, and monitoring legal tasks; assisting with governance tasks, including Board minutes, resolutions, and presentations; conducting independent research and analysis; and performing special projects. This position will also provide general administrative support such as responding to legal inquiries and correspondence and filing legal documents.
Create Your Path: The Work Youll Do:
- Provides support for the Business Council, Tribal Administrator, Business Council Committees
(as needed) and the General Council by drafting correspondence, resolutions and other legal
documents, including graphics. Proofreads legal documents. Prepares agendas and meeting
materials/presentations. Takes and transcribes minutes of meetings.
- Interacts and provides assistance to General Legal Counsel and other outside legal counsel.
Screen and monitor all incoming emails and information for the Legal Department and
provide follow-up. Conducts independent research and analysis. Prepares reports and
provides recommendations. Review legal documents and forms.
- Assist all Community Departments (i.e., Land, Social Services, Finance, Health, etc) with
handling of legal and other issues.
- Assist Community Members and employees with general legal matters and provide necessary
guidance.
- Establishes and maintains files and records relating to administrative and litigation matters.
- Maintain a calendar for attorney(s) and assure that complete information is available for all
matters. Assist with Child Welfare matters.
- Holds position of CERC (Community Employee Rights Commission) Administrator, if
applicable:
- Administrative responsibility to enforce the policies and procedures of the SMSC Employee Rights Commission as set forth by the Business Council.
- Receives complaints alleging discrimination (race, color, creed, religion, disability,
etc.), harassment (sexual and other), for all community and casino employees.
- Provides petition forms and rules to employees and field employee questions as it
relates to filing a petition and the process involved.
- Works directly with independent Hearing Examiner in processing petitions, notifying
parties involved, gathering background information, setting a hearing date, etc.
- Attends hearing and provides support to Hearing Examiner. May also be required to
be the official record keeper of the hearing.
Preferred Experience:
- 5 years' experience and any combination of post-secondary education with legal support, administrative support.
- Proficiency in word-processing, spreadsheets, presentation, database, electronic mail software.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret common legal documents.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in oral and written form with all levels of management.
