The Benefits Director is responsible for the strategic direction, design, governance, delivery, and ongoing evolution of health, welfare, retirement, leave, and wellness programs. This role develops and executes multi-year benefits strategies that support business objectives, enhance the employee experience, and ensure programs remain competitive, sustainable, cost-effective, and compliant.
The Benefits Director partners with HR and business leadership to evaluate workforce needs, market trends, and program effectiveness, leveraging data, analytics, technology, automation, and emerging AI-enabled capabilities to enhance the employee benefits experience. The role collaborates across Human Resources, Compensation, Finance, Payroll, Legal, Technology, and external vendors to deliver benefits solutions that support talent objectives and the Company's employee value proposition while ensuring effective governance and compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Strategy, Innovation & Partnership
- Develop and execute multi-year benefits strategies for health, welfare, retirement, leave, and wellness programs aligned with business objectives, workforce needs, and talent priorities.
- Lead the design, evaluation, and continuous improvement of benefits programs to support attraction, retention, engagement, and workforce well-being.
- Monitor market trends, healthcare developments, employee feedback, regulatory changes, and competitive practices to identify opportunities and recommend program enhancements.
- Apply a broad total rewards perspective to benefits strategy, ensuring alignment with talent objectives and the employee value proposition.
- Identify and implement opportunities to enhance employee experience, operational efficiency, and service delivery through technology, analytics, automation, and process improvements.
- Leverage data, utilization of metrics, and employee insights to evaluate program effectiveness and support decision making.
- Lead the financial management of benefit programs, including budgeting, forecasting, cost management, and long-term sustainability planning.
- Develop business cases and recommendations related to plan design, vendor solutions, and employee wellness investments.
- Partners across HR, Compensation, Finance, Payroll, Legal, Technology, Communications, Talent Acquisition, and business leaders to support organizational priorities.
Leadership & Operations
- Lead relationships with consultants, carriers, third-party administrators, wellness providers, and technology vendors, including vendor selection, contract negotiations, and performance oversight.
- Oversee benefit administration and drive continuous improvement in service delivery, systems integration, employee self-service capabilities, and operational efficiency.
- Develop, coach, and lead a high-performing benefits team while fostering a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and customer service.
Compliance & Governance
- Ensure compliance with applicable benefit laws and regulations, including ERISA, HIPAA, COBRA, ACA, and FMLA.
- Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and recommend program or policy changes as appropriate.
- Maintain strong governance, documentation, controls, records management, and risk management practices to support compliance and business continuity.
- Lead or participate in enterprise-wide projects, strategic initiatives, and special assignments as needed.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field.
- 10+ years of progressive benefits leadership experience, including strategy development, plan design, administration, compliance, financial management, and vendor oversight.
- Demonstrated success developing and implementing benefits and wellness strategies.
- Experience leading and developing high-performing teams.
- Strong knowledge of health and welfare plans, including self-insured and fully insured program structures, retirement programs, leave programs, benefits funding strategies, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Experience managing complex benefits budgets and financial initiatives.
- Demonstrated ability to influence stakeholders, lead cross-functional initiatives, and drive change.
- Strong analytical capabilities and experience using data and insights to support decision making.
Preferred
- Experience within retail or other geographically dispersed organizations supporting both hourly and salaried workforces.
- Experience implementing or enhancing benefits administration, HR technology, and employee experience platforms.
- Experience utilizing analytics, automation, and emerging technologies to improve employee experience and operational effectiveness.
- Experience partnering across Compensation, Benefits, and broader HR functions.
- CEBS, SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, SPHR, or comparable professional certification.
In accordance with the Pay Transparency requirements, the following represents a good faith estimate of the compensation range for this position. At BJ’s Wholesale Club, we carefully consider a wide range of non-discriminatory factors when determining salary. Actual salaries will vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, education, experience, and qualifications. The pay range for this position is $185,000 - $215,000.
This is a hybrid role. Tuesday through Thursday are in-office days at BJ's Club Support Center in Marlborough, MA and Monday and Friday are remote days.
