About this role
Description
POSITION SUMMARY:
We're looking for a senior CNC programmer to plan and program work across our full machine shop — 2-3 axis mills, mill-turn/live-tooling lathes, and 3+2 indexed multiaxis mills — using Mastercam 2025. This is a hands-on programming role: you'll take parts from print to verified, production-ready NC code, and you'll be the person other programmers and machinists turn to when a setup gets complicated.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Program parts in Mastercam 2025 across mill (2-3 axis), lathe/mill-turn (including live tooling and sub-spindle transfer), and 3+2 positional multi-axis work, choosing the right process for each part rather than defaulting to one machine type.
- Read and interpret engineering prints, including GD&T callouts, and translate tolerance and finish requirements into realistic toolpath, tooling, and work holding decisions.
- Plan work holding and setup sequencing — single- and multi-setup mill parts, sub-spindle part transfer on the lathe, and multi-plane/indexed orientations on multi-axis work — to control cost, cycle time, and accumulated location error.
- Select tooling, feeds, and speeds appropriate to the material and operation, rather than relying on default values.
- Verify programs using solid/machine simulation (including fixture, holder, turret, and trunnion models where applicable) before release to the floor, to catch collisions and gouges ahead of the first live cut.
- Maintain and troubleshoot post processors and control definitions, and diagnose posted-code issues (incorrect rotary axis output, canned-cycle mismatches, offset errors) down to the root cause.
- Produce clear setup sheets and documentation — tool lists, work offset/plane assignments, and setup notes — that let another programmer or machinist run the job without reconstructing your reasoning from scratch.
- Support the shop floor during first-article runs and troubleshoot in-process issues (chatter, finish problems, thread fit, transfer marks, and similar) as they come up.
- Continuously look for opportunities to reduce cycle time and improve repeatability on running production jobs.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 5+ years of CNC programming experience, with hands-on Mastercam experience (2025 or recent prior versions).
- Demonstrated ability to program 2-3 axis mill work: pocketing, contouring, drilling/tapping, and multi-setup part planning.
- Demonstrated ability to program lathe/mill-turn work: OD/ID turning, grooving, threading, and live-tooling/C-axis operations; sub-spindle part-transfer experience a strong plus.
- Demonstrated ability to program 3+2 (positional/indexed) multiaxis work: plane/WCS strategy, work-offset planning across multiple orientations, and collision-aware setup verification.
- Working knowledge of G-code and post-processor structure, sufficient to read, troubleshoot, and hand-edit posted programs when needed.
- Solid understanding of feeds, speeds, and tooling selection for common shop materials (e.g., aluminum, stainless, and alloy steels).
- Ability to read engineering prints, including GD&T, and machinist-level shop math.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with a specific control platform used in-house (e.g., Fanuc, Siemens, or a Fanuc-style proprietary control) — specify per your shop.
- Experience training or mentoring junior programmers.
- Familiarity with CMM/inspection processes and how they relate back to programming and fixturing decisions.
- Continuous simultaneous 5-axis programming experience, beyond 3+2 positional work.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- The performance of this position will require exposure to the manufacturing areas where all areas require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, hearing protection, steel toe shops, and other mandatory safety equipment.
- For the most part, ambient temperatures with typical plant lighting and manufacturing equipment are present throughout the facility.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Sit or stand as needed.
- Walking primarily on a level surface for periodic periods throughout the day.
- Reaching above shoulder height, below the waist, or lifting as required to reach documents or store materials throughout the workday.
- Proper lifting techniques required.
- Ability and comfortability to work in small confine spaces while following proper safety protocol.
SAFETY AND POLICY PRACTICES:
Each employee must be knowledgeable of standard safety policies and procedures and adhere to the same while supporting the goals and objectives of the organization and recognizing the Company’s need to achieve its business objectives. Each employee is responsible for complying with company hazardous waste disposal procedures.
