Senior Lean Engineer (All Levels) - Solar
Mortenson is currently seeking a Lean Engineer to join our Solar group. The main responsibility will be to create a culture of inclusion and continuous improvement in our Pre-Construction teams (Design Phase and Supply Chain). This position will also support the overall Lean organization which will involve: data harnessing (collecting, organizing, and analyzing project information to guide better decision-making) and lead bigger projects that span across business functions.
Location: HQ
Travel: This position will require some travel to project sites- 25%.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Drive Lean initiatives across Preconstruction, Supply Chain, and their interfaces with Operations and project teams.
- Analyze end-to-end business workflows to identify waste, bottlenecks, handoffs, rework, and opportunities to improve flow, predictability, and value creation.
- Facilitate Kaizen and improvement workshops with cross-functional stakeholders to identify root causes and implement sustainable solutions.
- Ability to organize, analyze, and validate data and communicate results through clear metrics and dashboards.
- Identify opportunities to leverage technology and AI to simplify work, improve decision-making, automate repetitive activities, and generate actionable insights while following approved company standards.
- Develop and maintain process maps, standard work, visual management, and operating systems that make processes clear, repeatable, and standardized.
- Support implementation and sustainment of improvements by establishing clear ownership, standardizing new processes, developing adoption plans, and monitoring performance after implementation.
- Partner with project teams and stakeholders to resolve operational challenges and improve business performance.
- Apply Lean methodologies, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement tools to improve safety, quality, productivity, and schedule outcomes.
- Monitor improvement initiatives and track progress against established goals and performance metrics.
- Promote flow and pull-based thinking, with an emphasis on reducing batching, minimizing work-in-process (WIP), improving handoffs, and advancing one-piece-flow principles.
- Coach and develop team members in Lean thinking and problem-solving, building capability within the organization rather than simply executing improvements on behalf of others.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related degree OR equivalent combination of education and technical/field experience demonstrated over multiple years of work experience
- Internship experience in construction or manufacturing
- Prior experience in construction job sites preferred
- Current driver’s license
- Solid understanding of continuous improvement principles
- Excellent reliability and follow-through

- Strong sense of curiosity and optimism
- Effective communication and active listening skills
Senior Lean Engineer I
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related degree OR Equivalent combination of education and technical/field experience demonstrated over multiple years of work experience
- The base pay range for this role is $89,500 to $120,800
Senior Lean Engineer II
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related degree OR Equivalent combination of education and technical/field experience demonstrated over multiple years of work experience
- Minimum five years' construction or manufacturing experience
- Minimum two years in a full-time continuous improvement role in manufacturing or construction
- The base pay range for this role is $95,700 - $129,200
(Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL – 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR – 10%, Washington, D.C. – 12.5%).
Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity. This position is eligible for Mortenson’s incentive plan.
