About this role

We are looking for a talented Systems Engineering Product Specialist to join our Cummins Inc. team in Seattle, Washington .

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

- Define and manage system requirements that align stakeholder expectations with product performance, quality, and business objectives.

- Lead cross-functional integration efforts to ensure mechanical, electrical, controls, battery, thermal, and software systems operate seamlessly together.

- Translate complex customer, product, and technical needs into clear, measurable, and verifiable engineering requirements.

- Drive product development decisions by identifying technical risks, resolving requirements gaps, and improving system-level understanding.

- Establish robust verification and validation strategies that improve product reliability and reduce development risk.

- Facilitate technical reviews and stakeholder alignment to accelerate informed decision-making across engineering disciplines.

- Strengthen product quality through structured problem solving, interface management, failure mode analysis, and systems engineering best practices.

- Enhance engineering efficiency by developing organized documentation, traceability frameworks, and knowledge management processes that support long-term program success.

Additional Responsibilities & Preferred Key Competencies:

First Mode is developing and deploying an innovative hybrid-electric retrofit solution for ultra-class electric-drive mining haul trucks. This technology captures energy that would otherwise be lost during braking and retarding, stores it within a modular battery system, and intelligently redistributes that energy through advanced power electronics and controls to reduce diesel consumption, lower emissions, and enhance overall vehicle performance.

We are seeking a talented Senior Systems Engineer to provide technical leadership in requirements development, system definition, and verification planning for this highly complex electromechanical product.

This opportunity is ideal for an engineer who thrives in technically challenging environments and can rapidly develop a deep understanding of complex systems with a high level of independence. You will analyze mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, system architecture diagrams, interface definitions, test results, and existing technical documentation to identify gaps, resolve inconsistencies, and collaborate with subject matter experts to transform evolving information into robust systems engineering deliverables.

The primary focus of this role is requirements management, including establishing and maintaining the system requirements hierarchy, defining and managing the Systems V framework, and partnering closely with test engineers to develop comprehensive, traceable verification and validation strategies that support successful product development and integration.

- Develop a comprehensive understanding of product mechanical, electrical, controls, battery, power electronics, thermal, safety, and vehicle system interactions to support successful system integration.
- Review engineering drawings, electrical schematics, system architectures, specifications, field data, and test results to identify risks, assumptions, interfaces, and improvement opportunities.
- Define system boundaries, operating scenarios, functional architectures, interface requirements, and system decompositions that support product lifecycle objectives.
- Create, manage, and maintain verifiable system and subsystem requirements while ensuring clear acceptance criteria and alignment with stakeholder needs.
- Establish and maintain end-to-end requirements traceability across stakeholder needs, architecture, interfaces, risk assessments, design outputs, verification activities, and validation evidence.
- Partner with engineering teams to develop verification and validation matrices, establish verification methods, monitor execution, and ensure compliance with product requirements.
- Lead requirements reviews, interface reviews, and verification readiness assessments with engineers, suppliers, subject matter experts, and program stakeholders.
- Evaluate requirement changes and communicate potential impacts to technical risk, system performance, interfaces, schedules, resources, and verification scope.
- Drive resolution of conflicting, ambiguous, missing, or non-verifiable requirements through structured systems engineering methodologies.
- Support design reviews, systems integration efforts, testing activities, technical risk assessments, failure mode analyses, and product problem-solving initiatives.
- Utilize Jira, Kanban methodologies, Confluence, SharePoint, Grafana, and related engineering tools to effectively manage backlogs, technical documentation, workflow visibility, and engineering knowledge management.
- Apply knowledge of requirements management, Systems V development, interface control documentation, configuration management, systems integration, DVP&R practices, and verification planning to improve project execution.
- Bring experience or interest in hybrid and electric vehicle technologies, energy storage systems, power electronics, high-voltage systems, industrial equipment, or other advanced electromechanical applications.
- Demonstrate strong leadership, organization, adaptability, relationship-building, and communication skills while working across multiple engineering disciplines and stakeholders.
- Support hands-on system learning, validation activities, and testing efforts using available hardware and local test facilities as needed.
- Relocation assistance may be considered if we identify a highly qualified candidate whose skills and experience closely align with the position requirements.

Please note that the salary range provided is a good faith estimate on the applicable range. The final salary offer will be determined after considering relevant factors, including a candidate’s qualifications and experience, where appropriate.
