About this role

POSITION SUMMARY:
•    This position helps to guide the YMCA Community in their wellness journey through the support of our personal training program.  They will assist members in attaining their short and long-term goals by intentionally welcoming, connecting with and supporting our members. Our part-time trainers get paid on a per-session basis.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
•    Conduct personal training sessions for YMCA members.  Contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive, safe and nurturing environment, that fosters an excellent service to members, guests and program participants in the Y.
•    Guide clients through our training options and support them in selecting a plan that will help them to succeed in their goals.
•    Track assigned members’ individual progress and take appropriate action to motivate members to continue their YMCA membership and good exercise habits.
•    Schedule training sessions and accurately track use of pre-paid sessions, utilizing the processes of the Health and Wellness department.
•    Attend appropriate and required training classes offered by the Woodson YMCA as well as classes needed to maintain certification and allow for personal growth.
•    Follow systems, practices, and training related to risk management and safety of participants and staff and follow accident reporting procedures and policies. Remain alert to the condition of equipment and report any concerns to supervisor.

•    Must work within scope of practice as defined be the active certifications held. Refrain from diagnosing injuries, offering medical advice, and dispensing or endorsing any and all commercial health products especially nutritional supplements, vitamins, performance enhancing substances and pain relievers.
•    Follow all requirements outlined in the Staff Expectations.
•    Perform any other duties assigned by the Director.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:
•    Certifications required within 30 days of hire: CPR/AED and First Aid.
•    Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social, age and economic 
segments of the community.
•    Job appropriate education and/or equivalent experience and certifications. 
•    Requires previous experience in the health and wellness field.
•    Must have a current National Personal Training or Strength Training certification from one of the following certifying bodies: ACE, NETA, AFAA, ISSA, NASM, or any other certification which obtain accreditation from the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) or National Fitness Board of Examiners (NFBE).
•    Must have knowledge of fitness related research and program design including basic anatomy, physiology, exercise principles and health behavior change methods.

SUPPORT OF YMCA SAFETY:
•    To appropriately help ensure the safety of all employees, members, participants and guests, it is the obligation of this position to:
•    Follow employees and volunteers’ screening requirements and use screening instruments to screen for abuse risk.  
•    Provide employees and volunteers with on-going supervision and training related to abuse risk. 
•    Provide employees and volunteers with regular feedback regarding their boundaries with consumers. 
•    Require employees and volunteers to adhere to policies and procedures related to abuse risk. 
•    Respond quickly to policy and procedure violations using the organization’s progressive disciplinary procedures. 
•    Respond seriously and confidentially to reports of suspicious and inappropriate behaviors.  
•    Follow mandated reporting requirements.  
•    Communicate to all employees and volunteers the organization’s commitment to protect their consumers from abuse. 
•    Report essential abuse risk management information to the board of directors.
