Job Description

Basic Purpose

Positions in this job family are responsible for performing support functions related to library or archival activities for an agency. This primarily involves cataloging services, basic reference and research. Some positions may be assigned overall responsibility for providing library services in a state institution, school or other facility.

Typical Functions

- Manages a library at a state facility.
- Develops procedures and recommends policies for work unit.
- Performs basic reference and research services for users, including Internet and database searching.
- Assists clients with on-line retrieval of information.
- Performs cataloging of library materials using on-line databases.
- Processes interlibrary loan requests.
- Processes archival records or library materials.
- Shelves and files library materials.
- Maintains various files, records and statistics.

Level Descriptor

Level I – This is the basic level where incumbents are responsible for performing the most routine functions related to library, archival or records management activities. Such activities include shelving and filing materials, responding to basic information requests and assisting in warehousing archival and records management materials.

Level II - This is the career level where incumbents are responsible for performing assigned activities at all levels of complexity. Such activities include monitoring various files, records and statistics, providing reference and research services to users and providing cataloging of materials.

Education and Experience

Level I - Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of one (1) year of experience in clerical or library work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting thirty (30) college credit hours for the one (1) year of experience.

Level II - Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of two (2) years of experience in clerical or library work; or completion of sixty (60) college credit hours including six (6) semester hours of library courses from an accredited college or university; or a combination of education and experience substituting thirty (30) college credit hours for each year of the required experience.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies

Level I - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of basic clerical procedures; of grammar, punctuation and spelling; of library records and their purpose; and of library classification systems.

Ability is required to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; to follow oral and written instructions; to use computers; and to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Level II - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of basic clerical procedures; of grammar, punctuation and spelling; of library records and their purpose; of library classification systems; and of principles and practices of library procedures.

Ability is required to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; to follow oral and written instructions; to use computers; and to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Special Requirements

Some agencies allowing the substitution of education for experience may require a candidate to have a minimum of six (6) semester hours of library courses.

Additional Job Description

Position may be filled at Level I or II.

Position is located in the Division of Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired - Oklahoma Library for the Bind and Physically Handicapped - in Oklahoma City (SBVI72).

Essential Functions:   This position is responsible for data entry including student, parent, and school information into the KLAS database; using KLAS to process orders from TVIs (Teacher of the Visually Impaired); working in warehouse pulling and shipping equipment and textbooks for students in public, private and homeschool locations including lifting heavy books and equipment, maintaining monthly inventory of shelves, assists with the weeding of collection; assisting with collection of information for Federal Quota Registration; utilizing Excel to create spreadsheets for required reports and contacting school districts via email and phone to obtain formation for the AIM center.

Applicant must be willing to perform all job-related travel.

Trial period (if applicable) is required.
