About this role
Job Title: Field Service Engineer Semiconductor Equipment Job Description
The Field Service Engineer supports advanced semiconductor manufacturing equipment in a highvolume cleanroom fabrication environment. This highly technical, hands-on role focuses on maintaining equipment reliability, performing fault isolation and root cause analysis, and restoring complex process tools that are critical to semiconductor production. You will troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, vacuum, and control systems using schematics, diagnostic software, system logs, and test equipment to minimize downtime and maximize tool performance. This position is ideal for engineers and technicians who enjoy real troubleshooting on sophisticated automation and manufacturing systems in a fast-paced semiconductor environment where equipment uptime is essential.
Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair complex semiconductor process equipment that includes electrical, mechanical, electromechanical, pneumatic, vacuum, and control system components.
- Perform advanced fault isolation and root cause analysis using electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, ladder logic, control system documentation, software diagnostics, and system alarms.
- Utilize test equipment such as digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, process monitoring tools, and diagnostic software to identify and verify equipment failures.
- Repair or replace critical system components including motors, servo systems, sensors, PLC I/O components, power supplies, relays, valves, pumps, vacuum components, controllers, and motion control hardware.
- Execute preventive, predictive, calibration, and corrective maintenance activities in accordance with equipment specifications and manufacturing requirements.
- Support equipment installation, startup, commissioning, qualification, software upgrades, and equipment acceptance testing.
- Analyze equipment performance data to identify trends, recurring failures, and opportunities to improve reliability and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
- Respond quickly to equipment alarms, process excursions, and unscheduled downtime events and drive rapid, effective issue resolution.
- Collaborate closely with process engineers, manufacturing engineers, operators, maintenance teams, and customer stakeholders to resolve complex technical issues affecting production.
- Maintain detailed service documentation, including troubleshooting steps, corrective actions, failure analysis reports, and maintenance records.
- Complete equipment-specific technical training and continually develop expertise on semiconductor process systems and emerging technologies.
- Apply structured troubleshooting methodology using fault isolation, diagnostic data, alarm histories, and equipment logs to identify failure mechanisms and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Support high-uptime manufacturing operations by maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality, and tool availability.
- Work within automated material handling system (AMHS) environments that transport wafer pods throughout the fab between process tools, stockers, and manufacturing areas.
- Engage in hands-on work on advanced manufacturing equipment rather than desk-based design tasks, including diagnosing failures, solving electrical and mechanical issues, and replacing components.
Essential Skills
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related technical discipline preferred.
- Strong understanding of electrical systems, power distribution, motors, sensors, relays, control circuits, and industrial automation systems.
- Proven experience troubleshooting electromechanical systems in semiconductor, industrial manufacturing, automation, aerospace, defense, automotive, or other high-tech environments.
- Ability to interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, P&IDs, assembly drawings, and technical manuals.
- Working knowledge of PLC-based control systems, motion control systems, HMIs, industrial networks, and automated manufacturing equipment (preferred).
- Familiarity with vacuum systems, robotics, process equipment, servo systems, and precision mechanical assemblies.
- Strong ability to diagnose and resolve failures in electrical, electromechanical, and control systems.
- Hands-on experience using diagnostic equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and other electronic test tools.
- Experience troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining complex automated equipment, including replacement and alignment of mechanical assemblies and precision components.
- Understanding of pneumatic, vacuum, motion control, and robotics systems.
- Ability to apply structured root cause analysis methodologies to complex equipment failures.
- Demonstrated troubleshooting methodology using fault isolation, diagnostic data, alarm histories, and equipment logs.
- Proven ability to identify failure mechanisms, implement effective corrective actions, and prevent repeat issues.
- Demonstrated ability to quickly learn complex equipment platforms and absorb technical training.
- Strong focus on safety, quality, equipment reliability, and tool uptime, with a dependable and responsive work style.
- Ability to perform effectively during critical, production-impacting events.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working in high-uptime manufacturing or production environments.
- Background as a maintenance technician, field service technician, or service engineer on advanced equipment.
- Experience in semiconductor equipment service or similar high-tech capital equipment environments.
- Mechanical aptitude and comfort working with tools and precision assemblies.
- Customer service mindset with the ability to communicate effectively with engineering teams and operations personnel.
- Interest in hands-on problem solving and working directly with advanced automation and manufacturing systems.
- Comfort working with electronics and electrical troubleshooting in a production setting.
- Ability to follow detailed procedures with precision and maintain accurate service documentation.
- Willingness to continuously develop skills and stay current with emerging semiconductor process technologies.
