Job Title: Executive Manager – Technology Modernisation

Location: Bangalore

Business & Team:

ASB is one of New Zealand’s leading banks and a wholly owned subsidiary of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. This role sits within CBA India and is dedicated to ASB — you will build and lead ASB’s India-based engineering capability, working shoulder to shoulder with ASB Technology leaders in NZ. ASB is mid-flight in a generational modernisation of its technology, data and digital estate. The agenda is set and owned by ASB’s leadership in New Zealand; India’s job is to bring the engineering depth that accelerates it. The portfolio spans migrating the core to SAP TRBK and simplifying the legacy HOST estate, modernising cards across issuing and acquiring, the full payments technology agenda, scaling Pega across decisioning, workflow, lending and financial crime, modernising the data estate onto a cloud data platform, and re-platforming integration.

Underpinning all of it are CBA Group engineering foundations — cloud-first architecture, Golden Pathways and DevSecOps, automation-first testing, and AI-powered engineering at scale. This is not a support function. It is real engineering accountability, delivered from India.

You will lead ASB’s India-based engineering capability — engineers, platform and architecture specialists, testing, data and delivery talent — organised into squads that sit inside ASB’s tribes and into chapters that hold the engineering craft. The teams operate as a genuine extension of ASB, not a resource pool: named outcomes, shared tribe governance and cadence, common engineering standards, and direct partnership with ASB tribe leads, product owners, architecture, risk and operations across both geographies.

Impact & Contribution:

As Executive Manager – Technology Modernisation, you lead the India engineering capability that delivers across ASB’s modernisation portfolio — SAP TRBK core migration and legacy simplification, Cards Modernisation, the payments technology agenda, and the Pega estate — together with the cloud, integration, data and quality engineering that make them land. You will work in genuine partnership with the ASB New Zealand leaders who own the modernisation agenda, translating their roadmaps into executable engineering plans, mobilising squads inside ASB tribes, setting and holding the engineering bar, and carrying delivery, operational and regulatory risk for what India commits to.

Success is a world-class engineering capability across these domains — one that measurably accelerates ASB’s modernisation journey, delivers to committed timelines, holds the compliance and regulatory bar without exception, takes risk out of complex migrations, and does it at materially better cost. Alongside the immediate commitments, you will build the longer-term edge: automation-first quality engineering, AI-powered engineering, and the engineering depth that lets ASB retire legacy with confidence.

Roles & Responsibilities:

- Lead India’s engineering capability across core banking, cards, payments, Pega, data and integration, translating ASB New Zealand’s modernisation roadmap into clear, sequenced delivery plans with measurable outcomes.
- Build outcome-led engineering squads and chapters integrated with ASB tribes, with clear accountability across software, platform, cloud, data and quality engineering.
- Set and uphold engineering excellence , embedding cloud-first architecture, API-led and event-driven integration, Golden Pathways, DevSecOps, CI/CD automation, security controls and measurable engineering standards.
- Make automation and quality engineering a core strength , establishing reusable test frameworks and large-scale migration testing to reduce manual regression, accelerate delivery and protect customer outcomes.
- Drive major modernisation programmes , including SAP TRBK core migration, legacy HOST transformation, Cards Modernisation and enterprise Pega, while managing complex migration, cutover and cross-platform dependencies.
- Build a resilient, always-on payments capability spanning domestic and cross-border payments, real-time processing, switching, settlement, reconciliation, observability and incident readiness.
- Lead AI-powered engineering adoption , using generative and agentic AI for software development, testing, legacy comprehension, migration, knowledge discovery and operational support, with strong governance, responsible-use guardrails and measurable benefits.
- Own the India engineering operating model , including resilience, security, regulatory readiness, cost, risk, talent and capability building, while creating a high-performance culture and strong partnership across India and New Zealand.

Essential Skills:

- 15–18+ years of hands-on technology and engineering experience, built on a genuine engineering foundation rather than a purely programme or delivery-management career path. You should still be credible in an architecture or design review, able to read a solution design critically, and able to challenge an engineering or vendor decision on its technical merits.

- Deep, demonstrable delivery experience in at least one of: SAP core banking modernisation (TRBK or equivalent), Cards Modernisation, Payments, or enterprise Pega — evidenced by systems you have taken to production, not programmes you have governed. Credible working knowledge across at least two of these domains is required: depth in one is the gate, breadth is what makes this role work.
- Automation-first quality engineering: Proven experience building automated testing at scale across major migrations, including reusable frameworks, integration, performance, resilience and production validation, replacing manual regression with pipeline-driven automation.
- Core banking & legacy modernisation: Deep experience modernising complex banking platforms, including SAP HANA/core banking, large-scale data migration, reconciliation, dual-run, cutover, legacy decommissioning and AI-enabled legacy code discovery.
- Cards, payments & Pega expertise: Strong engineering depth across cards issuing/acquiring, payment rails and switching, settlement and reconciliation, alongside enterprise Pega platforms, workflow, decisioning and platform governance.
- Modern architecture & platform engineering: Strong command of cloud-native, domain-driven and event-driven architectures, microservices, APIs, distributed systems, Kubernetes, infrastructure as code and scalable platform engineering.
- DevSecOps, reliability & security: Advanced CI/CD, Golden Pathways, automated security controls, observability, SLOs, resilience, disaster recovery, threat modelling, vulnerability management and audit-ready technology controls.
- AI-powered engineering: Hands-on experience embedding agentic and generative AI across coding, code review, testing, legacy comprehension, migration and operations, with measurable outcomes, robust evaluation and responsible AI guardrails.
- Engineering leadership & capability building: Proven leadership of engineering leaders and multidisciplinary teams across squads, tribes and partners, with experience building senior engineering capability, insourcing critical skills and developing succession.
- Executive & regulated banking leadership: Strong executive presence with experience operating across jurisdictions, managing regulatory and technology risk, and building trusted partnerships with onshore product and technology leaders in complex financial services environments.

Education Qualification:

- Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology or a related discipline; a postgraduate technology or leadership qualification is desirable.
- Certifications in cloud architecture, Pega, payments, test automation, security or agile delivery are advantageous.
