About this role
Main purpose
We are looking for a Crude Trader to join our crude oil trading desk in Geneva, focusing on the West African and Latin American books and building towards the Mediterranean. Working alongside experienced traders, you will take ownership of physical trading activity, book optimisation and P&L in your core regions, while deepening your command of Atlantic Basin and Far East arbitrage flows. This is an opportunity to grow quickly, and to broaden from a regional specialism into a wider Atlantic Basin book, within one of the world's leading trading companies.
Key responsibilities
- Trade and develop the West African and Latin American crude oil books, with responsibility for physical trading, optimisation, risk management and P&L, and progressively take on the Mediterranean book alongside senior traders.
- Identify and capture arbitrage opportunities out of West Africa and Latin America towards Europe, the Mediterranean and the Far East, incorporating crude quality, freight, regional refining economics and alternative crude values.
- Maintain detailed knowledge of West African and Latin American crude grades, production developments, loading programmes, export flows and refinery demand.
- Monitor global crude fundamentals, refinery margins, freight markets and competing regional flows (including European balances) to identify relative-value and trading opportunities and contribute regional insight to the desk's global market view.
Required qualifications
- Minimum 1–3 years' experience in crude oil physical trading, with a total of 3+ years in Commodities Trading
- Demonstrable working knowledge of West African and/or Latin American crude grades, including quality parameters, pricing mechanisms and loading logistics, with the ability to trade third-party physical cargoes in these regions.
- Evidence of P&L contribution (from trade ideas, book management or hedging) and the drive to build a measurable track record through different market conditions.
- Good grasp of Atlantic Basin arbitrage mechanics, including freight, quality adjustments and refining economics, and the appetite to develop Far East arbitrage expertise.
- Solid understanding of crude fundamentals: production, export flows, refinery demand and competing regional supply, ideally supported by experience building supply/demand balances.
- Experience operating within risk management frameworks and adhering to position and exposure limits, including physical and paper differential exposure management.
- Excellent English — oral and written, native or equivalent to C2 level.
Preferred qualifications
- Degree in Finance, Economics, Engineering, a science or another quantitative field.
- Additional experience in crude derivatives, swaps and hedging instruments.
- Developing network of relationships across NOCs, producers and refiners in West Africa and Latin America.
- Familiarity with Dated Brent pricing, OSP mechanics, and relevant pricing benchmarks (Platts, Argus).
Attributes for success
- Commercially driven
- Deeply analytical
- Collaborative
- Relationship-focused
- Clear communicator
