About this role
Job Title: Contract Manufacturing Engineer Job Description
This contract Manufacturing Engineer role is ideal for a hands-on engineer with a strong CNC machining background who can immediately support production operations during a temporary leave. You will focus on documenting machining processes, optimizing CNC setups for lathes and mills, and providing direct shop-floor troubleshooting support in a fast-paced, high-mix environment. The position requires a plug-and-play professional who can hit the ground running with minimal direction and quickly contribute to stable, repeatable machining processes.
Responsibilities
- Develop and update detailed CNC machining setup sheets for lathes and mills, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and repeatability across production runs.
- Create clear, step-by-step work instructions and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for machining processes that currently rely on tribal knowledge.
- Troubleshoot machining issues directly on the shop floor, working side-by-side with machinists to diagnose problems and implement timely solutions.
- Verify proper machine setup and adherence to documented processes so that parts are correctly dialed in and not run out of specification.
- Shadow shop-floor employees to observe undocumented processes and convert their practical knowledge into formal, standardized documentation.
- Organize and maintain machining documentation, including setup sheets, job setup sheets, setup cards, process sheets, operation sheets, and tool sheets, to support efficient and reliable production.
- Collaborate with machinists and manufacturing personnel to identify opportunities for CNC setup optimization and process improvements.
- Support manufacturing and process engineering activities related to CNC machining of metal components, ensuring robust and repeatable operations.
Essential Skills
- Strong CNC metal machining background with hands-on experience in mills and/or lathes.
- Proven ability to create accurate and usable setup sheets, SOPs, and machining documentation, including job setup sheets, setup cards, process sheets, operation sheets, and tool sheets.
- Hands-on troubleshooting experience on the shop floor, working directly with machinists and production staff.
- Experience working with metals in a manufacturing or process engineering environment.
- Ability to hit the ground running with minimal direction and quickly adapt to existing processes and equipment.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, high-mix machining environment with frequent changeovers and varied part types.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- background in manufacturing engineering or process engineering related to CNC machining operations.
- Experience creating and maintaining work instructions, SOPs, and other process documentation for CNC machines, mills, and lathes.
- Familiarity with CNC routers and setup activities across different machine types.
- Strong communication skills to effectively capture tribal knowledge from shop-floor personnel and translate it into clear documentation.
- Ability to collaborate with machinists and production staff to identify and implement process improvements.
- Detail-oriented approach to documenting setups, tooling, and operational steps to support repeatable and efficient machining.
Work Environment
The role is based in a production machining environment that focuses on CNC metal machining with lathes, mills, and potentially routers in a fast-paced, high-mix setting. You will spend significant time on the shop floor working directly with machinists, observing live setups, and troubleshooting issues at the machines. The environment emphasizes hands-on engagement with equipment and processes, rapid problem-solving, and close collaboration with manufacturing personnel to maintain reliable and well-documented operations.
