About this role
Enphase Energy is a global energy technology company and a leading provider of solar, battery, and electric vehicle charging products. Founded in 2006, our innovative microinverter technology revolutionized solar power, making it a safer, more reliable, and scalable energy source. Today, the Enphase Energy System enables users to make, use, save, and sell their own power. Enphase is also one of the most successful and innovative clean energy companies in the world, with more than 80 million products shipped across 160 countries.
Join our dynamic teams designing and developing next-gen energy technologies and help drive a sustainable future!
The Enphase Power Systems Innovation team in the office of the CTO is seeking a Mechanical Technician Temp for 3 months to support hands-on build-up, assembly, and integration of prototype solid-state transformer (SST) racks, skids, and enclosures. This is a full-time, 3 month temp position requiring on-site presence every day at our Austin, TX facility. Candidates must be local to the Austin metro area.
The primary responsibility is assembling mechanical structures, mounting components onto racks and skids, and preparing prototype hardware for engineering test and evaluation. You will work under the direction of the engineering team, following assembly drawings, work instructions, and verbal guidance to deliver completed, test-ready assemblies.
What You Will Do
- Rack and skid assembly—assemble prototype racks, equipment skids, and enclosures from engineering drawings; mount power modules, transformers, capacitor banks, heatsinks, fans, and supporting hardware onto structural frames
- Component mounting and hardware installation—drill, tap, and fasten components using appropriate fasteners, standoffs, DIN rails, and mounting brackets per assembly drawings and torque specifications
- Sheet metal and structural fabrication support—perform basic cutting, bending, deburring, and fitting of sheet metal panels, brackets, and structural members using shop tools
- Heatsink and thermal system assembly—mount heatsinks, cold plates, fans, ducting, and thermal interface materials per engineering specifications; ensure proper contact pressure and alignment
- Busbar and conductor installation—install pre-fabricated busbars, power conductors, and grounding straps per assembly drawings; perform basic bending, drilling, and insulation wrapping as needed
- Fit checks and prototype iteration—identify fit, interference, and assembly issues during builds; communicate findings to engineers and implement hands-on fixes to keep builds moving
- Receiving and inventory support—receive prototype parts and materials, verify against packing lists and purchase orders, organize and stage parts for assembly
- Test fixture fabrication—build mechanical test fixtures, jigs, and support structures for prototype testing including vibration, thermal, and environmental test setups
- Documentation and as-built records—maintain build logs, mark up assembly drawings with as-built conditions, take build photos, and record deviations from design
- Safety and housekeeping—follow all EHS procedures, maintain a clean and organized lab and shop area, and use appropriate PPE for all fabrication and assembly tasks
Who You Are and What You Bring
- Fundamental mechanical knowledge — solid understanding of mechanical fasteners, torque specifications, tolerances, fits, and basic structural concepts
- Fundamental electrical knowledge — comfortable working around electrical systems; understanding of basic electrical safety, grounding, and lockout/tagout procedures
- Education: Associate’s degree or technical certificate in Mechanical Technology, Industrial Maintenance, Manufacturing Technology, or related field; or equivalent military/trade training
- Experience: 2+ years of hands-on mechanical assembly, fabrication, or technician experience in a lab, manufacturing, or prototype environment
- Local to Austin, TX — must be able to report on-site daily for the full 3-month temp duration; this is not a remote or hybrid position
Minimum Skills, Knowledge, and Special Attributes
- Mechanical assembly proficiency—demonstrated ability to read mechanical assembly drawings, exploded views, and BOMs, and translate them into correctly assembled hardware
- Hand and power tool proficiency—skilled with torque wrenches, impact drivers, drill presses, band saws, grinders, taps and dies, and basic shop equipment
- Measurement and inspection—proficient with calipers, micrometers, tape measures, levels, and squares; ability to verify dimensions against drawings
- Material handling—experience operating pallet jacks, hand trucks, and hoists for moving heavy components safely; forklift certification a plus
- Basic electrical aptitude—ability to use a multimeter, identify wire gauges, and perform simple electrical tasks such as grounding strap installation and sensor mounting
- Attention to detail—meticulous approach to torque specs, hardware selection, alignment, and workmanship quality
- Self-starter with strong work ethic—ability to work independently once given clear direction, and proactively flag issues to the engineering team
Additional Desired Skills
- Power electronics or energy equipment experience—prior experience assembling inverters, transformers, switchgear, or similar power conversion equipment
- Welding and metal joining—MIG/TIG welding certification or hands-on welding experience
- CAD literacy—ability to navigate 3D models in SolidWorks, STEP viewer, or eDrawings to understand assembly intent
- Rigging and heavy equipment handling—experience with overhead cranes, gantry cranes, chain hoists, and machinery skates for moving heavy assemblies
- Forklift certified—current forklift operator certification for cushion or pneumatic tire forklifts
