About this role
Join National Gas and help be the energy behind the change.
National Gas is responsible for operating and maintaining Britain's national gas transmission network, helping to keep the lights on, businesses running and homes warm.
We manage the critical infrastructure that safely and reliably transport gas across Great Britain, supporting the energy security that millions of people depend on every day.
While delivering for Britain today, we're also preparing for tomorrow. Through innovation, investment and the development of future energy infrastructure, we're helping to create a cleaner and more sustainable energy system for generations to come.
As a graduate, you'll be given meaningful responsibility from the start, supported to develop professionally, and empowered to contribute to projects that have a real impact on the nation's energy future. Whether you're solving complex challenges, driving innovation or delivering essential services, you'll play an important role in an organisation with genuine purpose.
Join us and help shape the future of energy.
About the Role
Join our Process Safety team and play a key role in helping to keep National Gas employees, contractors and assets safe. As a Safe Systems of Work Graduate Engineer, you'll support the frameworks, processes and tools that help ensure work is carried out safely across our network, while gaining valuable experience in engineering, operational safety and risk management.
This is a unique opportunity to work with a specialist team responsible for guiding how work is safely managed across nationally important infrastructure. You'll gain exposure to engineering, operational safety, risk management and continuous improvement, while developing both technical and professional skills.
Day-to-day, you could be:
• Supporting the development and improvement of safe systems of work.
• Helping implement and maintain digital safety tools and systems.
• Analysing data and performance information to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
• Supporting the development of policies, procedures and guidance documents.
• Working with operational teams to understand how safety processes are applied in practice.
• Preparing reports, presentations and communications for stakeholders.
• Supporting engineering improvement initiatives and safety-focused projects.
• Gathering feedback from operational teams and helping identify improvements.
Throughout the programme, you'll gain experience in process safety, operational risk, engineering governance and business improvement. You'll develop strong analytical, communication and problem-solving skills while learning how safe working practices support the reliable operation of critical national infrastructure.
About You
We're looking for someone who is curious, thoughtful and eager to learn. You won't be expected to know everything from day one, but you should enjoy understanding how things work, solving problems and working with others to improve processes and ways of working.
You'll be someone who:
• Has a genuine interest in engineering, safety and risk management.
• Enjoys analysing information and solving problems.
• Is comfortable using data and evidence to support decisions.
• Works well with others and builds positive relationships.
• Communicates clearly and confidently with different audiences.
• Is willing to challenge existing ways of working constructively.
• Takes ownership of their work and development.
• Has a positive attitude and is open to learning new skills and technologies.
A standout candidate will be naturally curious about how work is safely managed in operational environments. They'll enjoy understanding processes, identifying opportunities for improvement and working with a wide range of stakeholders. Most importantly, they'll be enthusiastic about developing their engineering knowledge while helping create safer ways of working.
We celebrate the different experiences our colleagues bring to our organisation and strongly encourage applications from people of all backgrounds.
What you'll need
You'll hold, or be on track to achieve, a degree in a relevant subject. Suitable degree disciplines include:
• Engineering
• Process Safety
• Chemical Engineering
• Mechanical Engineering
• Or another STEM-related subject with relevance to engineering, safety or risk management.
We're interested in your potential and transferable skills as much as your academic background. A strong application might include examples of:
• Solving technical or practical problems.
• Using data and evidence to make decisions.
• Working collaboratively to achieve a shared goal.
• Analysing information and presenting findings clearly.
• Managing projects, coursework or competing priorities.
• Using Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
An interest in engineering systems, operational safety, risk management or business improvement would be beneficial, but it isn't essential. What matters most is your curiosity, willingness to learn and enthusiasm for developing a career within engineering and process safety.
A good application will include a cover letter to help us understand why you're a great fit for the role. Be sure to include any other relevant experience or university modules.
Studies suggest that women tend to apply only if they meet 100% of the criteria. If you resonate with our mission, the role excites you and your skills align, we encourage you to apply.
The Essentials
This is an 18-month fixed-term graduate programme . You must have the right to work in the UK for the duration of the programme. For further information, visit GOV.UK (UK Security Vetting: Clearance Levels).
As part of the programme, you'll have opportunities to visit operational sites and work with teams across the business to understand how safe systems of work are applied in practice. This means occasional travel beyond your usual place of work may be required. Due to the nature of the role, you'll need a full UK driving licence by the time you join the programme. Following a successful online application, you'll be invited to complete an online assessment. Candidates who progress to the next stage will then be invited to a virtual solo interview. The final stage of the process is an in-person Assessment Centre in December or January. We'll share further details closer to the time, including the date and location.
