About this role
APM Terminals
Crane & Engineering Services (CES) is APM Terminals' Shanghai-based crane and terminal-equipment lifecycle business, located at the heart of the world's principal crane manufacturing base. CES serves the APM Terminals network and selected external clients across equipment quality and technical assurance, project management and commissioning, structural engineering and inspection, maintenance and repair, upgrades and life extension, and equipment decarbonization.
As Managing Director, you will set the CES strategy, own the operating result and the independent technical position CES exists to provide, and turn what CES sees across the project and equipment lifecycle into better specifications, supplier performance and investment decisions.
Key Accountabilities
As Managing Director, you will be accountable for the CES operating result — P&L, people, safety, quality, delivery and cost — across the full equipment lifecycle.
Strategy, performance and growth
- Set and execute the CES strategy in alignment with APM Terminals and Asset Design & Engineering, positioning CES as a competitive, scalable technical-services business for the terminal network and selected external clients.
- Own the CES operating result within the approved mandate and delegation of authority — P&L, cash, forecast, cost base and resource allocation across project delivery, maintenance and repair, structural services and overhead.
- Shape the service portfolio and growth agenda — quality assurance and commissioning, inspections, structural engineering, maintenance and repair, upgrades and life extension, and equipment relocations — without diluting independence or technical standards.
Clients and stakeholders
- Act as the senior CES counterpart to terminal leadership, Project Execution, Investments, Procurement, OEMs and external clients, building trusted relationships and aligning technical decisions with business outcomes.
- Translate client needs into clear scopes, commitments and delivery plans, and intervene personally on critical projects, claims and disputes where executive leadership is required.
- Represent CES in governance forums and major technical and investment decisions, communicating risk, options, cost and trade-offs clearly.
Technical authority and lifecycle value
- Be accountable for CES's technical-assurance system across the equipment lifecycle — design review, quality assurance and manufacturing supervision, commissioning, acceptance and handover to operations, warranty, and structural integrity across APM Terminals' existing fleet.
- Equipment scope: ship-to-shore (STS) cranes; yard cranes including RTG, RMG and automated stacking cranes; mobile harbour cranes; horizontal transport including straddle and shuttle carriers, terminal tractors and AGVs; and lift trucks including reach stackers and empty-container handlers — in manned, remote-controlled and automated configurations.
- Convert manufacturing, commissioning, warranty and fleet findings into improved specifications, inspection practice and supplier requirements, and bring lifecycle and total-cost-of-ownership evidence into design and investment decisions within Asset Design & Engineering and Asset Management.
- Own structural-integrity authority across the fleet: fracture-critical findings, remaining-life assessment and repair quality.
- Adapt CES support and service scope for technology transition — electrification, decarbonisation, automation and new equipment technologies entering the fleet — in coordination with Operational Technology and Asset Management.
OEM and supplier ecosystem
- Hold OEMs and suppliers to their contractual specification compliance, quality, delivery and HSSE obligations, escalating systemic failure in coordination with Project Execution and Procurement, and use CES's factory presence to mitigate delivery variability before it reaches the terminal.
- Develop the supplier landscape — qualification of new sources, dual sourcing and technical development of emerging manufacturers — to widen APM Terminals' options on cost, capacity and technology while protecting technical standards.
People, organisation and operating excellence
- Lead and develop the CES management team across Quality Assurance, Project Management & Commissioning, M&R Services, Finance and People.
- Own organisation design, succession and capability development in scarce crane, structural, commissioning and supplier-quality disciplines; retain and grow the Shanghai bench and the partner and contractor model required for effective global deployment.
- Establish a disciplined SQDC performance system using transparent data, standardised ways of working, digital tools and automation to improve productivity, predictability and scalability.
- Build a culture that combines technical integrity and professional courage with commercial accountability, client orientation, collaboration and continuous improvement.
Safety, statutory and governance accountability
- Own safety and quality for CES people and sites, with the authority to suspend work and to withhold release, acceptance or certification where the evidence does not support it.
- Act as legal representative of the CES China and Hong Kong entities under PRC and HK work-safety and special-equipment frameworks, operating the statutory control system — safety, labour, tax and foreign exchange, and data — through the functional Legal, Tax, HSSE and People teams.
- Report to the CES Board of Directors on mandate, performance, risk, integrity and statutory matters, and protect CES independence, confidentiality and professional integrity in technical and commercial decisions.
What We're Looking For
Continuous improvement mindset: a thoughtful improvement mindset, curious about how work gets done and motivated to make meaningful, sustainable improvements over time.
- Leadership expectation: consistently puts customers first, leads by example with respect for people, delivers results with integrity, and drives continuous improvement by solving problems at the root, developing people, and raising standards every day.
- Senior P&L or general-management leadership of a technical, project or industrial operating unit, holding a management team to safety, quality, delivery and cost.
- Substantial experience in ports, cranes, heavy lifting, industrial project delivery, technical services or capital equipment, with credibility in both technical and commercial discussions.
- Proven ability to lead complex OEM and supplier relationships — quality, contractual, warranty and performance issues — and comfort carrying the authority on release, acceptance and warranty.
- Commercial and business acumen, including growing a technical service business and translating engineering risk and complexity into clear business decisions.
- Track record of leading multicultural specialist teams, organisational change and continuous improvement across multiple locations; proven ability to operate in China, with Mandarin a significant advantage.
- Sound judgement on contracts, risk and confidentiality, working through Legal, HSSE, Tax and Finance functions.
- Degree in engineering, business or a related discipline; fluent English; high integrity and composure under pressure.
