About this role
Position Summary:
The Adjunct Instructor for HVAC/R and Electrical Applications delivers employer-sponsored workforce development training to working adults in virtual and hands-on lab environments. Learners are incumbent workers whose employer has contracted StrataTech to build technical competency on the job. They bring field experience into the classroom and expect instruction that is technically credible, practically grounded, and directly applicable to workforce development.
This role delivers assigned curriculum in two modalities; synchronous virtual sessions and scheduled lab weeks, and is accountable for instructional quality, student outcomes, and professional representation of StrataTech in a Fortune 500 client environment. It is a delivery role. Curriculum is developed by the B2B curriculum team and followed as designed. Content is not modified without approval.
The adjunct schedule is established per cohort. Instructors are engaged on a cohort-by-cohort basis aligned to the program calendar. This is not a campus-based position.
Responsibilities:
Instruction and Curriculum Delivery
- Deliver assigned HVAC/R and electrical curriculum in synchronous virtual sessions and in-person lab environments with technical accuracy and instructional clarity.
- Follow the assigned curriculum as designed. Content is not substituted, condensed, or modified without approval from the Senior Director, Enterprise Training Operations.
- Prepare for every session in advance. Review materials, confirm equipment readiness for lab sessions, and enter the session ready to instruct.
- Adapt delivery style to adult learners who bring field experience. Meet them where they are technically without lowering the standard the program requires.
- Maintain accurate attendance, participation, and progress records in Canvas or the assigned LMS for every session.
- Complete all required documentation, reporting, and administrative tasks accurately and on time.
Virtual Session Delivery
- Deliver synchronous virtual sessions using Microsoft Teams or the assigned platform. Be on screen, on time, and set up to instruct.
- Facilitate discussion, check for understanding, and hold student engagement at the same standard as an in-person session. A virtual session is not a lecture broadcast.
- Use the virtual environment to connect basic HVAC/R or electrical theory to real equipment and systems. Draw on field experience to make content relevant to what learners encounter on the job.
- Manage virtual participation actively. Identify disengaged or absent learners and address it within the session.
- Notify the StrataTech Leadership immediately if platform issues prevent delivery.
Lab Session Delivery
- Set up the lab environment before each session so that equipment is operational, materials are staged, and the space is ready before the first learner arrives.
- Inspect all equipment and tooling before each lab session. Report deficiencies, damage, or missing consumables to the Senior Director, Enterprise Training Operations before the session begins, not after.
- Enforce all applicable safety protocols, PPE requirements, and OSHA standards without exception. Stop unsafe work immediately, regardless of schedule pressure.
- Facilitate lab activities at a pace that builds competency, not just task completion. Learners should understand what they are doing and why.
- Reset the lab environment at the conclusion of each session. Equipment returned to its designated location, consumables replenished or documented for restocking, and lab space left in training-ready condition.
Student Engagement and Outcomes
- Hold students to the standard the program requires. These are working professionals in a workforce development program, not traditional students. Expectations are clear and the bar does not move.
- Identify learners who are falling behind and intervene early. Do not wait for the issue to surface at a final assessment.
- Provide clear, specific, and actionable feedback throughout the program. Feedback at the final evaluation only is not sufficient.
- Administer assessments with integrity and grade against the defined rubric.
- Document and report student performance, attendance, and outcomes in Canvas on the timeline the program requires.
Professional Conduct and Client Representation
- Conduct yourself as a representative of StrataTech in every interaction; on client property, on virtual platforms, and in written communication.
- Comply with all client site access, security, and safety requirements for lab sessions. Questions about site requirements go to the Principal Technical Instructor before arrival, not after.
- Communicate with client-side personnel professionally and within the scope of your instructional role. Escalate questions or concerns about the program, the client relationship, or learner conduct to StrataTech leadership.
- Raise equipment issues, scheduling conflicts, and student concerns proactively. Do not surface problems at the last possible moment.
Attendance and Reliability
- Be present and ready to instruct for every scheduled virtual and lab session. Learner employers track session delivery.
- Travel to lab sites as assigned. Lab locations may include StrataTech campuses and client or employer training facilities.
Continuous Development
- Stay current on the technical content being delivered, including changes in HVAC/R system standards, electrical codes, and equipment common to the assigned program.
- Maintain EPA 608, NFPA 70E, or other credentials required for the assigned program. Credentials must be current before first delivery.
- Seek and apply feedback on instructional delivery. Participate in required observations, calibration sessions, and StrataTech instructor development activities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Five or more years of hands-on field experience in HVAC/R systems, commercial or industrial electrical systems, or both. Experience must include work on the types of equipment and systems present in the assigned program.
- EPA 608 Universal certification. Current and active at time of hire. Required before first delivery.
- NFPA 70E electrical safety awareness or equivalent. Required before first delivery.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate technical content clearly to adult learners with varying levels of prior experience. Field experience alone does not constitute instructional readiness.
- Ability to deliver instruction effectively in a synchronous virtual environment. Comfort with Teams or comparable video platforms and with managing learner engagement remotely.
- Professional conduct record consistent with representation of StrataTech at a client facility.
- Proficiency with basic digital tools including a learning management system, video conferencing platform, and standard documentation tools.
- Ability to travel to lab sites as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior instructional, training delivery, or apprenticeship instruction experience in HVAC/R, electrical systems, or a related technical discipline.
- Experience delivering training to working adults in a workforce development, corporate training, or apprenticeship setting.
- Journeyman or master electrician license in the state of delivery.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 in General Industry.
- Familiarity with commercial refrigeration systems, building automation systems, or variable refrigerant flow systems.
- Experience with Canvas or a comparable LMS.
- Prior work in a B2B, enterprise, or client-site training environment.
People Responsibilities:
- This position has no direct reports.
Physical Environment:
- Work is performed in classroom, lab, shop, and client facility environments, which may include varying temperatures, noise, and other conditions typical of an industrial or training setting.
- Incumbent may be required to stand, walk, stoop, bend, twist, and reach for extended periods.
- Incumbent will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as applicable to the work environment.
- Incumbent may sit for periods of time at a desk or computer terminal and use a computer, telephone, and other standard office or instructional equipment.
- Travel to client sites and other campuses is required as assigned.
