About this role

The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine is currently seeking applicants for a Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC) position, Non-Licensed, at the CRC-2 or CRC-3 level, to join the research team of Dr. Patrick Finan within our growing Department of Anesthesiology research program. This position is ideal for a clinical research professional ready to contribute to a full range of clinical research duties within an active clinical research laboratory, with a specific level of independence and responsibility commensurate with the selected candidate's qualifications and experience.

The Finan Lab, part of the Department of Anesthesiology's robust and expanding clinical research portfolio, investigates the psychological, behavioral, and neurobiological factors underlying pain and its treatment. This role offers the opportunity to coordinate complex, federally funded and investigator-initiated studies spanning behavioral pain research, experimental pain testing, and clinical outcomes research involving both healthy volunteers and patient populations.

This position works closely with the Principal Investigator, co-investigators, research staff, and multidisciplinary collaborators across the University. Individuals seeking this position must have working knowledge of clinical research conduct and regulatory requirements, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong organizational abilities, and the capacity to work both independently and as part of a team while managing research responsibilities appropriate to their level.

Responsibilities:

- Perform clinical research coordination duties, working closely with the Principal Investigator and other study team members on all assigned projects; CRC-3 level staff perform these duties with minimal supervision and take on increased responsibility.

- Demonstrate working knowledge of the regulatory framework governing FDA and non-FDA regulated studies and ensure adherence to study protocols and Good Clinical Practice.

- Support and/or facilitate study start-up activities, including contract and budget review, regulatory submissions, and communications with study sponsors and funding agencies.

- Coordinate one or more clinical trials or research projects simultaneously; CRC-3 level staff may manage large, complex, and/or multi-site studies.

- Manage aspects of ongoing study conduct, including recruitment, screening, and informed consent through data collection, off-study visits, safety reporting, and compliance oversight.

- Prepare and submit required regulatory documentation to the IRB, including personnel changes, continuing reviews, protocol modifications, deviations, and adverse/unanticipated event reports.

- Reconcile study billing, distinguishing charges covered by the study from those billed to participants or third-party payors, and support sponsor invoicing and payment reconciliation.

- Orient and provide training to new study team members.

- Notify the Principal Investigator and/or supervisor promptly of any issues regarding study conduct or participant status and communicate effectively with study sponsors.

- Liaise with other University departments and units, as needed, to support ongoing research activities in the Finan Lab.

- Demonstrate proficiency with electronic platforms used in clinical research, such as IRB Pro, Protocol Builder, CRConnect, OnCore, e-regulatory platforms, and Epic.

- Support investigator-initiated research by conducting literature searches, collating research materials, and assisting with abstract and manuscript preparation.

- Continuously enhance clinical research knowledge through training, mentorship, and self-directed learning.

- In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
