AES is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Senior Field Engineer to lead field execution, testing, and commissioning activities at the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR), AES's advanced technology validation and demonstration facility. This individual will play a critical role in evaluating emerging energy technologies, supporting first-of-kind deployments, and accelerating the transfer of innovative solutions from concept to commercial application, working alongside subject matter expertise in emerging technologies and advanced grid integration solutions on technology validation.
The Senior Field Engineer will implement and operate field test programs, commission new technologies, troubleshoot complex systems, maintain testbed infrastructure, and document lessons learned for broader deployment across AES. The role combines hands-on technical execution, project leadership, vendor collaboration, and innovation-driven problem solving.
This position is ideal for an engineer who enjoys working with cutting-edge technologies, solving difficult technical problems, and operating in a dynamic environment where requirements evolve as new opportunities emerge.
Key Responsibilities
Testbed Engineering, Validation, and Operations
· Lead field execution of technology validation programs at the NLR test facility.
· Design, build, and implement test setups for emerging energy technologies, including battery energy storage systems, inverters, controls, and other advanced power system equipment.
· Convert test objectives into safe, efficient, and executable field test plans.
· Prepare equipment, instrumentation, wiring, communications, and data acquisition systems required for testing activities.
· Execute tests and demonstrations while ensuring adherence to safety requirements and test procedures.
· Collect, organize, analyze, and report test data and findings.
· Develop test reports, lessons learned documents, technical summaries, and recommendations for future deployments.
· Manage multiple test campaigns simultaneously and prioritize activities in a fast-paced environment.
Technology Commissioning
· Lead commissioning activities for first-of-kind and pilot technology deployments at the testbed and project sites.
· Collaborate with vendors, contractors, AES engineering teams, laboratory personnel, and third-party specialists during commissioning activities.
· Develop commissioning plans and procedures.
· Verify equipment functionality, communications, controls, safety systems, and operational performance.
· Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve commissioning issues while maintaining schedule and documentation requirements.
· Support transitions from commissioning into long-term testing and evaluation activities.
Troubleshooting and Site Operations
· Serve as a primary technical resource for troubleshooting fielded equipment and testbed infrastructure.
· Diagnose electrical, controls, communications, software, and system integration issues.
· Coordinate repairs, upgrades, and maintenance activities with suppliers, contractors, AES teams, and laboratory staff.
· Maintain readiness and reliability of testbed equipment and supporting infrastructure.
· Support operations and maintenance activities necessary to keep the facility functioning safely and effectively.
Innovation and Knowledge Transfer
· Partner with AES subject matter experts and another test engineer to identify, define, and prioritize testing opportunities and test plans.
· Translate technical findings into actionable recommendations for projects, engineering teams, and leadership.
· Document commissioning and testing results in a manner that enables broad organizational learning.
· Capture and transfer lessons learned from technology demonstrations, failures, commissioning activities, and troubleshooting efforts.
· Contribute to AES innovation objectives by identifying opportunities to improve products, processes, and system performance.
Project Management and Stakeholder Coordination
· Coordinate field activities among suppliers, laboratory personnel, contractors, consultants, and AES personnel.
· Track schedules, deliverables, action items, testing milestones, and technical risks.
· Manage field activities while maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and documentation.
· Support budget planning, procurement coordination, and execution of testing initiatives.
Required Qualifications
· A minimum of 5 years of experience in testing, commissioning, operations, field engineering, or related technical roles.
· Demonstrated hands-on experience setting up, executing, and documenting engineering tests.
· Experience commissioning electrical or electromechanical equipment in field environments.
· Strong troubleshooting, root-cause-analysis, and problem-solving skills.
· Ability to independently diagnose and resolve complex technical issues and manage integrated systems.
· Experience coordinating suppliers, contractors, engineers, and technical stakeholders.
· Strong project management and organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple testing initiatives simultaneously.
· Innovative mindset and ability to succeed in an environment with changing requirements and emerging opportunities.
· Collaborative working style and ability to partner effectively with test engineers and subject matter experts.
· Demonstrated desire for continuous learning and technical growth.
· Ability to obtain a qualified electrical worker certification with AES.
Preferred Qualifications
· Hands-on experience with battery energy storage systems, batteries, or power conversion systems.
· Experience with utility-scale photovoltaic systems, inverters, power electronics, and controls.
· Experience with electrical testing, instrumentation, SCADA, energy management systems, or power plant controls.
· Experience commissioning first-of-kind technologies, pilot projects, or large-scale demonstrations.
· Knowledge of utility-scale power systems and grid-connected equipment.
· Experience with RTDS, hardware-in-the-loop testing, or other real-time simulation platforms.
· Familiarity with grid dynamics, grid stability, and inverter-based resource behavior.
· Experience collaborating with national laboratories or universities on testing, research, or demonstrations.
