About this role
Our mission is to Profoundly change the standard of care by creating a tomorrow where clinicians can confidently ablate tissue with precision; a tomorrow where patients have access to safe and effective treatment options, so they can quickly return to their daily lives. Changing the standard of care is part of our fabric. We are a group of energetic, problem-solvers focused on innovation, and looking to change the world. We are changing the paradigm for treating diseases such as prostate cancer by using real-time MR Imaging, thermal ultrasound and close-loop temperature feedback control, to gently ablate the diseased tissue with minimal side effects.
If you share our values and want to work in a collaborative results focused culture and want to make a Profound impact in healthcare and your career, here is your chance.
General Accountability
As a Software Development Co-op, you will work on TULSA-PRO, Profound Medical’s MRI-guided system that delivers therapeutic ultrasound from inside the urethra to ablate prostate tissue without incisions.
Working alongside experienced developers, you will contribute to the development, testing and improvement of software used in a safety-critical medical device environment. This role is built for learning: expect hands-on mentorship, ownership of well-scoped tasks, and a practical understanding of how software engineering changes when patients depend on the result.
Please note, this role is hybrid (3 days in office).
Duties and Responsibilities
- Build and enhance features in our C#/.NET and WPF desktop applications under the guidance of a senior developer.
- Write and run unit tests and help expand test automation, and learn why medical device code must be traceable to verified requirements.
- Investigate and fix defects, using debuggers, logs, and diagnostic tools to track problems to their root cause.
- Take part in requirements and design discussions to see how clinical user needs become software requirements, design, and code.
- Participate in software verification activities and contribute to test protocols and records.
- Prepare and update implementation and test documentation to the standard required for regulated software (design controls, IEC 62304 software lifecycle).
- Join code reviews, stand-ups, and sprint ceremonies as a full member of an Agile development team.
- Learn how the system works end to end, from MRI thermometry and ultrasound therapy delivery to the software that keeps each treatment safe and on plan.
Education & Certifications
Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer, Electrical or Biomedical Engineering, or a related field, and returning to studies after the work term.
Key Attributes
- Coursework or project experience in at least one object-oriented language (C# preferred; Java, C++, or Python considered).
- Exposure to Git or another version control system.
- Basic understanding of software testing and debugging.
- Exposure to WPF/XAML, desktop UI development, or the MVVM pattern is an asset.
- Interest in healthcare, medical imaging, or biomedical technology is an asset.
- Curious and quick to learn; asks questions early and is comfortable saying “I don’t know yet.”
- Careful and detail-oriented; understands that in medical devices, how software is built matters as much as what it does.
- Communicates clearly in writing and in person; shares progress and blockers early.
- Works under guidance and follows established processes; escalates decisions with design or safety impact to senior developers.
