Position description
The Commodity Manager – Materials develops and executes global sourcing strategies for direct-material categories, including polymers and resins, metals, chemicals, adhesives, coatings, films, packaging, and other production inputs. This role owns supplier relationships, cost, quality, specifications, capacity, inventory exposure, and supply continuity across the materials portfolio. Working closely with Engineering, Operations, Quality, Planning, and Finance, you will secure competitive, compliant, and reliable sources of supply that support new product development and ongoing production while advancing material standardization, sustainability, and year-over-year value.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
- Develop and execute multi-year sourcing strategies for assigned material categories to optimize total cost of ownership, supply assurance, quality, sustainability, working capital, and innovation.
- Lead RFI, RFQ, and RFP events and perform cost-driver, commodity-index, and benchmarking analyses for polymers and resins, metals, chemicals, adhesives, coatings, films, packaging, and other production inputs.
- Analyze feedstock and commodity indices, conversion costs, logistics, tariffs, supplier capacity, and regional market dynamics to anticipate risks and opportunities and deliver annual value targets.
- Own supplier relationships through performance scorecards, business reviews, capability assessments, and continuous-improvement initiatives.
- Negotiate pricing mechanisms, contracts, payment and delivery terms, minimum order quantities, lead times, inventory programs, and long-term agreements.
- Manage supplier and material risk, including financial health, geographic concentration, single-source exposure, capacity, allocation, transportation constraints, regulatory compliance, and price volatility.
- Partner with Quality on supplier qualification, change control, corrective actions, and defect reduction.
- Collaborate with Engineering and Operations during new product introduction and product lifecycle changes to influence material selection for cost, performance, quality, availability, and sustainability.
- Support specifications, sample and validation requirements, alternate-material development, and change-control activities.
- Lead risk mitigation, escalation, and recovery plans for raw-material shortages, obsolescence, logistics disruptions, force majeure events, long lead times, and other threats to production continuity.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Supply Chain, Business, or a related field.
- At least five years of progressive experience in procurement, strategic sourcing, or commodity management, including direct ownership of production materials such as polymers and resins, metals, chemicals, adhesives, coatings, films, packaging, or comparable categories.
- Demonstrated success negotiating supplier contracts and long-term agreements, including index-based pricing, volume commitments, inventory programs, and year-over-year cost or value improvements.
- Strong cost-modeling and data-analysis skills, with working knowledge of commodity indices, material specifications, conversion costs, logistics, and inventory economics.
- Proficiency with ERP/MRP systems such as SAP or Oracle and Microsoft Excel.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a global manufacturing environment managing materials used in production, including exposure to volatile or constrained commodity markets.
- Familiarity with new product introduction, material qualification and change control, supplier quality requirements, sustainability considerations, and alternate-material development.
- Professional certification such as CPSM, C.P.M., CSCP, APICS, or CPIM.
- Experience managing global suppliers, index-linked pricing, and supply-risk mitigation across multiple regions.
