Job Description:

Expected Duties and Responsibilities – Radiation Therapist (RTT)

A newly graduated Radiation Therapist is expected to demonstrate foundational clinical competency, professionalism, patient-centered care, and a willingness to learn while progressively developing independence under the guidance of senior therapists and clinical leadership.

Clinical Responsibilities

- Deliver radiation treatments accurately and safely in accordance with physician prescriptions, approved treatment plans, and established protocols.
- Perform daily patient setup, positioning, and immobilization using appropriate devices and techniques.
- Verify patient identity, treatment site, prescription, and treatment parameters before treatment delivery.
- Perform image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), including CBCT and other verification imaging, following established protocols.
- Recognize positioning discrepancies and escalate concerns to senior therapists, physics, or the treating physician as appropriate.
- Assist with CT simulations, patient positioning, immobilization device preparation, and documentation.
- Monitor patients during treatment and promptly report changes in condition, discomfort, or potential treatment-related concerns.
- Maintain radiation safety standards and follow all applicable clinical policies and procedures.

Equipment and Technical Competency

- Develop proficiency in operating assigned linear accelerators and associated treatment equipment.
- Perform and document assigned daily equipment checks and quality assurance activities within the therapist's scope of practice.
- Recognize equipment errors, treatment interruptions, or unusual machine behavior and immediately notify the appropriate personnel.
- Demonstrate continued improvement in understanding treatment techniques, imaging protocols, and equipment functionality.
- Participate in equipment-specific training and competency assessments.

Documentation and Workflow

- Accurately document treatments, imaging, patient setup information, and relevant clinical observations in the electronic medical record.
- Review daily treatment schedules and prepare appropriately for upcoming patients.
- Verify required treatment documentation and approvals are complete before proceeding.
- Communicate treatment delays, missed appointments, patient concerns, and scheduling changes promptly.
- Assist in maintaining efficient patient flow and minimizing unnecessary treatment delays.
- Collaborate with dosimetry, physics, nursing, and physicians to facilitate timely patient care.

Patient Care and Communication

- Demonstrate compassion, patience, and professionalism when interacting with patients and their families.
- Clearly explain treatment procedures and positioning instructions within the therapist's scope of practice.
- Maintain patient privacy, dignity, and confidentiality.
- Communicate effectively with patients, coworkers, and clinical leadership.
- Escalate clinical questions or patient concerns beyond the therapist's scope to the appropriate provider.

Professional Development and Accountability

- Accept guidance, constructive feedback, and mentoring from senior radiation therapists and supervisors.
- Demonstrate initiative in learning new treatment techniques, equipment, and departmental workflows.
- Ask questions and seek assistance whenever uncertain rather than proceeding without appropriate guidance.
- Work toward performing routine clinical responsibilities independently as competencies are demonstrated.
- Participate in departmental meetings, training sessions, and continuing education opportunities.
- Maintain required professional credentials, licensure, and certifications.
- Demonstrate punctuality, reliable attendance, effective time management, and accountability.
- Support coworkers and contribute to a respectful, collaborative work environment.
- Follow departmental policies, safety standards, and established chain-of-command procedures.

Performance Expectations During the Initial Employment Period

- Demonstrate steady progress toward clinical independence and proficiency.
- Complete assigned training and competency evaluations within established departmental timelines.
- Exhibit sound clinical judgment and recognize when supervisory assistance is necessary.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation with minimal repeated corrections.
- Demonstrate the ability to manage assigned patient responsibilities efficiently without compromising safety.
- Show initiative, adaptability, receptiveness to feedback, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
- Contribute positively to departmental productivity, patient satisfaction, and overall operational efficiency.

Overall Expectation: A newly graduated Radiation Therapist is not expected to possess the experience or efficiency of a seasoned therapist. However, they are expected to demonstrate safe clinical practices, fundamental technical knowledge, accountability, a positive attitude, and measurable progress toward becoming a competent, dependable, and increasingly independent member of the radiation oncology team.
