About this role

Digital News Editor

London | Full time

At Monocle, we go beyond the headlines to deliver sharp analysis, inspiring ideas and deep reporting, all with an ambitious global perspective. We cover international affairs alongside the ideas shaping business, design, urbanism and quality of life. We’re as interested in solutions and the people driving change as we are in the events of the day.

We’re looking for a Digital News Editor to shape our daily agenda across monocle.com , our newsletters and Monocle Radio. You’ll have the judgement to find a new angle on a major story, the curiosity to spot one that others have missed and the confidence to bring colleagues and contributors together to deliver an engaging, accurate report at pace.

This is a hands-on role at the centre of our editorial team. You’ll move between the immediacy of the daily news cycle and the planning that makes ambitious coverage possible: deciding what leads a newsletter, working with our bureaux on a developing story and making sure that the right guests are lined up for radio. Above all, you’ll help to ensure that our journalism is timely, accurate and unmistakably Monocle.

What you’ll do

- Set the daily news agenda across monocle.com (http://monocle.com), our newsletters and Monocle Radio, finding the right story and approach for each platform.
- Look beyond the obvious headlines to identify original stories and distinctive angles for our international audience.
- Take editorial responsibility for our newsletters, working closely with and overseeing the Assistant Newsletter Editor on story selection, commissioning, production and forward planning.
- Commission, write and edit engaging news coverage, drawing on Monocle’s editors, correspondents and international bureaux.
- Plan radio news coverage, maintaining a forward diary and co-ordinating contributors and schedules.
- Work with digital colleagues to develop our news offering on monocle.com (http://monocle.com) and use audience insights to make our coverage stronger.
- Keep a clear head when news breaks, when priorities shift or when several deadlines arrive at once.

What you’ll bring

- Strong newsroom experience and a record of shaping a daily news agenda.
- Excellent writing, editing and commissioning skills, with the instinct to find a distinctive Monocle angle.
- An international outlook and an appetite for current affairs that extends beyond the mainstream news cycle.
- The organisational skills to keep contributors, deadlines and multiple platforms moving together.
- A thoughtful approach to audience data and an understanding of digital publishing. Experience with GA4, newsletter platforms or content-management systems would be useful.
- A collaborative manner and the confidence to give clear editorial direction.
- Audio and people-management experience are welcome.

What we offer

- 23 days’ formal annual leave, 7 additional days off around the end of the year, plus eight bank holidays.
- Health, pension and life insurance benefits.
- Breakfast at Midori House five days a week.
- Discounts across Monocle shops and cafés.
- A dog-friendly office in the heart of Marylebone.

Monocle is an independent media brand. Since launching in London in 2007, we’ve grown from a magazine into a world of daily newsletters, Monocle Radio, digital journalism, events, retail and cafés. Our readers and listeners come to us for original reporting, useful ideas, an optimistic lens and a unique, considered view of the world.

The role is based 5 days a week at Midori House, 1 Dorset Street, Marylebone, with international travel as required. Working hours are 09.30 to 18.30.

If you can spot the story, find the angle and help an editorial team to tell it brilliantly, we’d love to hear from you.
