About this role

An exciting career awaits you

At MPC, we’re committed to being a great place to work – one that welcomes new ideas, encourages diverse perspectives, develops our people, and fosters a collaborative team environment.

The Logistics & Storage Environmental, Safety, Security and Product Quality (L&S ESS&PQ) department is seeking an enthusiastic, collaborative professional ready to expand their technical expertise, influence business decisions, and grow as an environmental leader. We are looking for candidates who build strong partnerships across teams, communicate effectively in both speaking and writing, and thrive in a fast-paced environment where their work can make a visible impact.

Position Summary:

The MPLX L&S ESS&PQ Group has a full-time, exempt opening for an Air Subject Matter Expert (SME) on the Air Compliance and Technical Support Team. This highly visible role will lead environmental air permitting and air compliance efforts for terminals, pipeline and marine facilities, and transport fleets across the country. The position offers an opportunity to shape compliance strategy, guide complex projects, build broad organizational relationships, and develop leadership capabilities while becoming a trusted technical advisor to the business.

Candidate location is flexible and can be based at any L&S location.  This position may require up to 25% travel with occasional overnight stays.

Key Responsibilities:

- Serve as a key member of an experienced team of Air SMEs, with opportunities to lead initiatives, broaden technical expertise, and influence environmental strategy.  Responsibilities will include the following:

- Serving as a trusted advisor to field Environmental Specialists by providing day-to-day air permitting and regulatory compliance support.

- Leading and supporting implementation of new and revised air regulations (i.e., 40 CFR Part 60 Subpart XXa and Part 63 Subparts R and BBBBBB).

- Collaborating with, and providing support and backup for, other Air SMEs (e.g., storage tanks, CEMS, LDAR), creating opportunities to expand expertise across multiple programs.

- Performing and documenting New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) determinations for terminal, pipeline, and marine projects.

- Leading and supporting air permit and compliance audits, communicating insights to stakeholders, and driving continuous improvement through the internal auditing program.

- Representing L&S in rule advocacy efforts through trade organizations, such as the International Liquid Terminals Association (ILTA), and helping shape practical regulatory outcomes.

- Creating and improving guidance documents and compliance tools that establish consistent practices and enable effective decision-making across the organization.

- Developing and delivering training to field Environmental Specialists on a wide range of air compliance and permitting topics, strengthening technical capability across the team.

- Helping lead emerging technology evaluations and digital transformation initiatives, such as Next Gen Maintenance and the new Environmental Accounting & Tasking system.

- Serve as Air Permitting Coordinator for the L&S organization — a visible leadership assignment that connects environmental expertise with engineering, operations, business development, and senior stakeholders.

- Represent L&S Environmental in engineering, business development, and other project-related meetings, providing clear recommendations and helping teams navigate permitting and scope decisions.

- Own and advance the air permit and project tracking program.

- Set air permitting priorities and strategically align internal and external resources.

- Identify the timeliest and most cost-effective permitting pathways to support project schedules and business objectives.

- Provide clear, proactive project updates — including scope changes and permit timing — to stakeholders and leadership.

- Lead or support development of air permit applications, complete detailed reviews of draft permits, and recommend solutions to complex permitting issues.

- Build productive relationships with state agencies and Field Environmental Specialists to obtain permits that support business objectives.

- Develop into a recognized Air Permitting SME for New Source Review (NSR), Title V (major), and non-Title V (minor) permitting, with a pathway to broader technical and organizational leadership.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Minimum Qualifications:

- High School Diploma or GED required with 15 years of relevant environmental experience in a process industry (e.g. refining, midstream, petrochemical or other heavy industrial); or Bachelor’s degree in a HES related field, Engineering degree, or advanced degree with 7 years relevant environmental experience.

- Detailed knowledge on current and proposed environmental rules and regulations with the ability to communicate impact plans to local leadership for budget development.

- Ability to review engineering designs and specifications to ensure compliance with appropriate environmental rules and regulations.

- Comprehensive knowledge of facilities and relationships with environmental rules and regulations with the ability to initiate steps that will avoid reoccurrence of environmental problems.

- A driver’s license is required.

- Must possess or be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
