Job Description
How This Hybrid Role Works
The position is intended to be split approximately equally between Veterinary Assistant and Client Service Representative duties each week. Shifts will generally be scheduled in one department or the other, so you can focus on that role during your assigned shift. The balance may change to meet hospital needs, including coverage for illness, vacation, staffing shortages or changes in patient volume. Flexibility and proficiency in both roles are essential.
Client Service Responsibilities
- Welcome clients and patients; answer calls, messages and questions with professionalism and empathy.
- Schedule appointments, check patients in and out, process payments and maintain accurate records.
- Help triage client concerns and communicate promptly with the appropriate medical team members.
- Maintain a clean, organized and welcoming reception area.
- Offer compassionate, discreet support during stressful or emotional situations.
Veterinary Assistant Responsibilities
- Run exam rooms, obtain thorough patient histories, and assist veterinarians during examinations and appointments.
- Work closely with the veterinarian and veterinary technician team to coordinate and support each pet’s care, including communicating patient needs and following treatment plans.
- Assist clients with online pharmacy requests, respond to prescription and order questions, and coordinate concerns with the medical team as appropriate.
- Provide client education on preventive care, medications, home-care instructions and veterinarian-recommended services, within the scope of training and under DVM guidance.
- Assist with triage, sample collection, laboratory processing and diagnostic imaging within training and skill level.
- Support patient nursing care, treatment preparation and hospitalized patient monitoring.
- Assist with surgical preparation, anesthesia monitoring and recovery as training and experience permit.
- Keep exam rooms and treatment areas clean, stocked and ready for patient care.
Qualifications
What We’re Looking For
- Veterinary hospital experience strongly preferred, especially across client service and clinical support; candidates experienced in one area and eager to learn the other are welcome.
- Excellent communication, organization, customer service and multitasking skills.
- Calm, compassionate approach with clients, patients and coworkers.
- Comfort with computers and practice software; DaySmart experience is a plus.
- Basic veterinary terminology, vaccine and preventive care knowledge preferred.
- Animal restraint, medical histories and laboratory experience are advantages.
- Dependability and willingness to work scheduled shifts in either department, with flexibility when coverage needs change.
- A collaborative, proactive attitude and desire to keep learning.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel and lift or move up to 50 pounds. Work may involve animal noise, odors, waste, scratches, bites and exposure to infectious or other clinical hazards. Appropriate training and safety procedures apply.
What We Offer
Competitive compensation based on experience; benefits for eligible employees; paid time off; uniform allowance; employee discounts; and opportunities for continuing education, training and growth.
