About this role

ADVANCE YOUR CAREER. ADVANCE THE WORLD.

At AMD, we believe technology has the power to solve the world’s most important challenges. From advancing healthcare and scientific discovery to powering AI and the technologies people rely on every day, innovation at AMD is shaping the future.

Whether you’re designing next-gen processors, enabling AI breakthroughs, or bringing leading edge products to market, every role at AMD contributes to something bigger — technology that moves the world forward. Join us and, together, we’ll advance your career.

THE ROLE:

AMD is looking for a Principal Member of Technical Staff Infrastructure Lead to help enable and support the infrastructure behind AMD’s flagship data center GPU platforms, including Helios. This is a highly visible, hands-on individual contributor role within a growing platform engineering organization supporting cutting-edge AI and large language model workloads.

In this role, you will serve as a technical leader across the three core pillars of data center infrastructure: networking, storage, and compute virtualization. You will work across infrastructure architecture, platform, security, and engineering teams to solve complex issues that span multiple technical domains.

You will be at the forefront of bringing new platforms and data center environments online, improving infrastructure reliability, and ensuring that critical issues are resolved quickly and do not recur. This is an opportunity to influence how AMD builds and operates its next generation of data center GPU infrastructure while working on technology at significant scale.

THE PERSON:

The ideal candidate is a proactive, hands-on technical leader who enjoys solving complex infrastructure problems and can connect issues across networking, storage, and virtualization environments.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong ownership, sound technical judgment, and the ability to remain effective during high-priority incidents. The candidate should be comfortable leading technical discussions, communicating clearly with engineering teams and leadership, and working independently in a fast-moving environment.

This person will thrive on a team that values flexibility, responsiveness, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Because this is an infrastructure reliability leadership role, the candidate should also be comfortable providing support outside standard business hours when critical incidents require additional attention.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Diagnose and resolve complex infrastructure incidents spanning data center networking, storage, and compute virtualization.
- Lead technical troubleshooting and root cause analysis using monitoring, logs, packet captures, and performance data to identify failure points and prevent repeat incidents.
- Partner with infrastructure architecture, platform, security, and domain engineering teams to implement reliable, scalable infrastructure solutions.
- Support the deployment and enablement of new AMD data center GPU platforms, including the surrounding network, storage, compute, and virtualization infrastructure required for operation.
- Design, review, and implement infrastructure solutions for new data center builds, site expansions, migrations, and hardware refreshes.
- Recommend architecture and reliability improvements that reduce incidents and improve platform availability, performance, and recovery.
- Establish effective infrastructure monitoring, alerting, documentation, and operational runbooks.
- Support capacity planning, high availability, failover, backup, and disaster recovery activities across infrastructure services.
- Identify opportunities to reduce repetitive operational work through automation, scripting, and infrastructure-as-code practices.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineers while helping raise the overall technical capabilities of the team.
- First 30 days: Learn AMD’s infrastructure environment, platforms, operating processes, and current technical priorities.
- Within 60 days: Begin contributing hands-on to infrastructure incidents, larger technical issues, and near-term improvement opportunities.
- Within 90 days: Take a leading role in incident response and architecture discussions and become a key technical resource for networking, storage, virtualization, and platform infrastructure questions.
- Long term: Serve as a trusted technical authority for platform enablement, infrastructure reliability, incident prevention, and future data center growth.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

- Principal or staff-level, hands-on experience supporting data center, private cloud, platform engineering, or site reliability engineering environments.
- Deep technical expertise across the three core infrastructure pillars: data center networking, enterprise storage, and compute virtualization.
- Experience diagnosing complex, cross-domain infrastructure issues and understanding how failures can propagate across network, storage, compute, and virtualization layers.
- Data center networking knowledge, including technologies such as VLANs, VXLAN/EVPN, spine-leaf fabrics, BGP, OSPF, LACP/MLAG, load balancers, firewalls, DNS, DHCP, and NTP.
- Experience troubleshooting network performance using packet captures, flow data, switch/router diagnostics, and telemetry.
- Enterprise storage experience across SAN, NAS, or software-defined storage platforms, including technologies such as Fibre Channel, iSCSI, NVMe-oF, NFS, SMB, Ceph, or vSAN.
- Experience identifying and resolving storage latency, throughput, IOPS, queue depth, multipathing, and resource-contention issues.
- Experience with compute virtualization platforms such as VMware vSphere/ESXi, KVM/QEMU, Proxmox, or Hyper-V.
- Strong Linux administration and command-line troubleshooting skills.
- Experience with bare-metal provisioning, firmware and BIOS management, hardware troubleshooting, and infrastructure lifecycle management.
- Exposure to containers or Kubernetes operating within virtualized or bare-metal infrastructure environments.
- Experience with infrastructure monitoring and observability platforms such as Zabbix, Prometheus, or Grafana.
- Automation, scripting, or infrastructure-as-code experience using tools such as Python, Bash, Go, Ansible, or Terraform is preferred.
- GPU, AI data center, HPC, high-speed Ethernet, RDMA/RoCE, or lossless fabric experience is a plus.
- Experience documenting technical environments and creating operational runbooks, network diagrams, and system architecture documentation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical risks and recommendations to both engineers and leadership.

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

- A bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical field is preferred.

LOCATION: Austin, Texas preferred. Other U.S. AMD locations may be considered based on business needs.
