Applied Materials, Inc. is the global leader in materials engineering solutions used to produce virtually every new chip and advanced display in the world. Our expertise in modifying materials at atomic levels and on an industrial scale enables customers to transform possibilities into reality. At Applied Materials, our innovations Make Possible ® the technology shaping the future.

At Applied’s CTO group, we focus on enabling technologies for quantum information applications, i.e. superconducting qubits and optical quantum computing. Our primary objective is to collaborate with system companies and universities to develop quantum devices with significantly lower error rates compared to current standards. Our approach centers on harnessing state of the art materials engineering and semiconductor processing to enhance device performance.

To advance our quantum technology initiatives, we are seeking a Senior Quantum Engineer, Hybrid Interconnect to pioneer technologies for scaling quantum systems through modular and heterogeneous interconnects. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in quantum devices and interfaces, with expertise in one or more areas such as quantum transduction, single-photon detection, quantum memory, and solid-state qubit interfaces to optical or microwave photons. Experience in device design, fabrication, and characterization is highly desirable. This role will focus on developing novel devices, materials, and integration technologies for coherent quantum interconnects, leveraging advanced semiconductor fabrication to bridge different quantum modalities and enable scalable, modular quantum architectures.

We value people and teams who turn possibilities into reality. We are deeply committed to fostering a Culture of Inclusion where every person knows they belong, feels empowered to bring their whole self to work, and is inspired to grow.

Responsibilities

- Pathfind and develop hybrid quantum interconnect technologies for scalable and modular quantum systems.
- Design and develop devices for quantum transduction, single-photon detection, quantum memory, and solid-state qubit-to-photon interfaces.
- Translate quantum-system and interconnect requirements into device, materials, fabrication, and integration specifications.
- Design and characterize hybrid quantum devices and test structures, connecting device-level performance with system-level requirements.
- Develop and optimize fabrication and integration processes involving superconducting, photonic, semiconductor, and other quantum materials and devices.
- Investigate heterogeneous integration approaches that combine multiple quantum device technologies within scalable architectures.
- Design experiments and perform electrical, optical, microwave, and cryogenic characterization, as appropriate for the device platform.
- Analyze device performance and identify relationships among materials, interfaces, fabrication processes, and quantum performance.
- Troubleshoot complex device and integration challenges and drive improvements in performance, reproducibility, and scalability.
- Collaborate across quantum physics, photonics, superconducting devices, materials, process engineering, packaging, and system engineering.
- Evaluate emerging quantum interconnect technologies and identify opportunities where advanced semiconductor manufacturing can enable system-level scaling.
