Job Description:

Microchip Technology Incorporated, is a leading developer of precision GPS/GNSS clocks and time synchronisation solutions used in critical infrastructure around the world. Our products support applications across national power grids, telecommunications networks, enterprise systems, and other advanced network environments in more than 80 countries.

As part of Microchip's Frequency and Timing Division, the Tekron team works within a global engineering environment focused on developing the next generation of precision timing technologies.

We are seeking an experienced Senior System Test Engineer to join our System Test team, working across complex embedded hardware and software systems. In this role, you will be responsible for system-level testing and validation activities focused on validating system performance, reliability, and functional behaviour under real-world operating conditions.

You will work across embedded platforms involving tightly integrated hardware and software systems, developing automated and hands-on test solutions and supporting validation activities, while partnering closely with cross-functional engineering teams to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve system issues. This role plays a critical part in supporting product readiness, long-term reliability, and ongoing platform refinement.

The ideal candidate brings a strong background in system testing across embedded, hardware/software integrated, or device-level systems, combined with excellent analytical and critical thinking capabilities. You are naturally curious, methodical in your approach to problem-solving, and able to systematically evaluate complex technical challenges, identify potential risks, and develop effective solutions. You communicate technical information clearly and confidently, build productive relationships across functions, and take ownership for delivering high-quality outcomes within a fast-paced engineering environment.

Key Responsibilities

- Deliver system-level testing and validation activities for new product development, proactively identifying risks, potential performance issues, and opportunities for improvement through structured analysis and critical thinking.
- Design, develop, and maintain comprehensive test plans, test procedures, and validation frameworks, establishing clear objectives, priorities, and execution timelines to ensure effective workflow management.
- Execute testing across the full validation lifecycle for integrated embedded systems, covering functional, integration, regression, stress, and performance testing while ensuring validation activities align with product quality and business objectives.
- Investigate, document, and support resolution of system defects and performance issues, applying a methodical approach to root cause analysis and collaborating with stakeholders to develop effective solutions.
- Develop automated test solutions, analyse test results, and support troubleshooting activities, clearly communicating findings, recommendations, and technical insights to engineering teams.
- Collaborate closely with software, hardware, systems, and cross-functional engineering teams throughout product development and integration, building strong working relationships and helping drive alignment and consensus to achieve project objectives.
- Partner with internal stakeholders across engineering and product teams to understand requirements, anticipate challenges, and ensure validation activities support successful product outcomes.
- Contribute to improvements in test tools, automation, and validation processes by identifying opportunities to increase efficiency, quality, and scalability.
- Take ownership of validation activities and deliverables, demonstrating initiative, accountability, and a strong commitment to achieving successful project outcomes.
- Effectively manage multiple priorities and competing demands, breaking complex objectives into achievable tasks and delivering results within agreed timeframes.

Requirements/Qualifications:

- You must have the right to work in New Zealand.
- Proven experience testing complex integrated hardware and software systems.
- Experience developing automated test frameworks and repeatable validation processes.
- Strong debugging, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and strategic problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate complex technical issues and develop practical solutions.
- Working knowledge of networking fundamentals, including Ethernet, TCP/IP, VLANs, and PTP/NTP time synchronisation.
- Experience developing test automation using Python, C#, or embedded C.
- Understanding of embedded systems, hardware/software integration, and system performance testing.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to tailor technical information to diverse audiences and present findings with confidence, clarity, and authority.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build credibility quickly, influence outcomes through well-reasoned recommendations, and work effectively with a broad range of internal stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to establish productive working relationships across cross-functional teams and contribute to a collaborative engineering culture.
- Strong organisational and workflow management skills, including the ability to prioritise activities, establish realistic timelines, and manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, take ownership of tasks and projects, and consistently drive activities through to completion.
- Ability to analyse technical data, draw meaningful conclusions, and communicate recommendations that support engineering decision-making.

Preferred Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electronics, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in system testing, validation, or test engineering.
- CompTIA Network+ qualification or similar.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary product development environments involving hardware, software, systems, and manufacturing teams.
