The Role
We are looking for a Student Structural Engineer to join our team in Leeds for a 12-month industrial placement in 2027-28.
We are well known locally for working on some of the most technically demanding and high-profile projects in the region. Our current portfolio includes projects such as the new £1bn Airedale Hospital, Kirklees Cultural Heart, Cannon Brewery in Sheffield, and Bradford City Village, as well as major regeneration projects within walking distance of the office such as the redevelopment of the Tetley Brewery site, Leeds Urban Village and Mabgate Yards. We’re also currently working on a number of major projects at various local Universities and NHS Trusts.
But what will I actually do?
You will be working with colleagues on different projects and learning new things pretty much straight away. To get a good understanding of civil infrastructure you will be looking at things like hydraulic modelling of surface and foul water networks, highways and junction design, cut and fill estimations and detailing and drawing of civil schemes for major projects.
We like to keep people involved in projects from start to finish, so you will get to see how design progresses from concept through to detail and onto construction. You get to see your designs come to life, piece by piece and step by step.
A lot of your work will be design based, but you will also have some involvement in the management side of projects. There is also an opportunity for you to get involved in some wider things such as STEM work, charity support and other community based activities.
What kind of projects will I get to work on?
You will be working with a highly skilled team of structural and civil engineers and technicians with a range of experience so that you can build your technical and project management skills. You’ll therefore be learning new things pretty much straight away. To get a good understanding of structural engineering design you will be looking at things like the modelling and analysis of superstructure and substructure elements, the assessment of structural options considering their pros and cons and helping to communicate our structural proposals in 3D models, sketches, drawings and reports.
