About this role

Who We Are

AngloGold Ashanti is a leading global gold mining company with a diverse portfolio of operations, projects, and exploration activities across ten countries. What we do goes beyond mining—we build livelihoods, champion environmental stewardship, and strengthen local economies. We cultivate an inclusive workplace rooted in safety, equity, and well-being, believing that exceptional results happen when we empower our people.

About the Role

We are seeking a Sr. Specialist, Exploration Geological Information Systems and Database (Canada) to lead and optimize our geological, geochemical, and spatial data infrastructure within the Greenfields Exploration team. In this role, you will act as the regional custodian for GIS and relational geodatabases, integrating multi-disciplinary data (drilling, assays, geophysics, and environmental metrics) to drive exploration targeting and operational decisions.

Key Responsibilities

- Geoscience Database Governance & Management

- Administer and continuously optimize the Greenfields Exploration geoscience information architecture, ensuring high system availability, security, and scalability.

- Establish, implement, and audit data governance frameworks, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and QA/QC protocols to protect geological data integrity.

- Proactively diagnose technical and workflow bottlenecks across field and office teams, delivering robust technical solutions and user support.

- Enterprise GIS & Spatial Data Custodianship

- Serve as the regional custodian for Greenfields GIS datasets, maintaining clean, centralized spatial geodatabases across regional project areas.

- Design and deliver high-impact geospatial products, 3D visualizations, and interactive spatial models to accelerate executive and technical exploration decision-making.

- Build and maintain custom GIS tools, web maps, and spatial web applications to streamline team workflows.

- Automation & ETL Workflow Engineering

- Architect, build, and deploy automated geoprocessing scripts and data integration pipelines using FME (Safe Software), Python, and SQL.

- Automate repetitive tasks including data ingestion, spatial transformations, QA/QC validations, and daily reporting.

- Partner closely with Enterprise IT to align regional database solutions with global infrastructure and security protocols.

- Collaborate with site exploration teams to support automated core/chip photography integration into the core database.

- Multi-Disciplinary Data Integration & Analysis

- Synthesize and merge multi-layered datasets—including surface geochemistry, diamond drilling, downhole geophysics, airborne magnetic surveys, and legacy mining data—into unified spatial databases.

- Ensure seamless data flow between field logging tools (e.g., acQuire, MX Deposit), enterprise databases, and downstream 3D modeling software (e.g., Leapfrog, ArcGIS Pro).

- Stakeholder Collaboration & Change Management

- Partner directly with exploration geologists, geophysicists, environmental scientists, and executive leadership to align data architecture with operational exploration needs.

- Author documentation and conduct hands-on training sessions for technical staff on database compliance, tools, and best practices.

- Translate complex database anomalies and spatial trends into clear, non-technical executive briefs and recommendations.

- Technology Leadership & Innovation

- Research, evaluate, and benchmark emerging database technologies, cloud spatial solutions, and machine learning tools to maintain a competitive edge in exploration data efficiency.

Required Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in Geosciences, Earth Science, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Computer Science, or a related field.

- 10+ years in resource exploration, mining development, or technical mining services, with specialized expertise in geoscientific data management.

- Hands-on experience designing and administering enterprise relational databases (SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or Oracle) integrated with spatial platforms (ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro).

- Proven track record using FME (Feature Manipulation Engine) or model builders for spatial data automation and ETL processes.

- Strong commitment to a zero-harm safety culture, excellent organizational skills, and a service-oriented mindset.

- Must be legally authorized to work in Canada.

Preferred Qualifications

- Programming Skills: Experience with Python, JavaScript, or R for desktop, web, or mobile spatial application development.

- IT Infrastructure: Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS/Azure), enterprise network architectures, or field hardware integration.
