Geoscience Advisor

Seismic Interpretation & AI Model Validatio n

About the Role

Viridien is seeking an experienced Geoscience Advisor to provide independent geoscientific expertise in the evaluation and validation of our Seismic Foundation Model.

This role will serve as a subject matter expert in seismic interpretation, ensuring that AI-generated geological interpretations are technically sound, geologically consistent, and aligned with industry best practices.

The Geoscience Advisor will play a critical role in establishing interpretation benchmarks, evaluating model performance, and providing recommendations to support the continued development and production readiness of AI-driven geoscience capabilities.

This is a highly specialized advisory role focused on geoscientific interpretation, technical validation, and quality assurance , rather than AI model development or training.

Key Responsibilities

Seismic Interpretation & Technical Validation

- Independently interpret seismic datasets to establish objective benchmarks for evaluating AI-generated results.
- Perform blind seismic interpretations prior to reviewing model-generated outputs to maintain independent assessment.
- Evaluate structural interpretations, including fault detection, fault segmentation and linkage, horizon tracking, and salt body delineation.
- Assess stratigraphic interpretations, including seismic facies, depositional systems, channel and fan geometries, sequence boundaries, and unconformities.
- Evaluate the geological accuracy, consistency, and reliability of AI-generated seismic interpretations across different geological settings.

Model Performance Assessment & Quality Assurance

- Develop and apply standardized evaluation criteria to assess the geological validity of model-generated interpretations.
- Evaluate fault geometry, displacement, structural connectivity, and consistency with regional tectonic frameworks.
- Assess seismic facies classification, geobody boundaries, and sequence-stratigraphic relationships.
- Identify interpretation inconsistencies, geological uncertainties, and areas requiring model improvement.
- Provide structured technical assessments and recommendations to support model refinement and production readiness.

Reference Dataset Development

- Establish and maintain high-quality reference interpretation datasets to support ongoing model validation.
- Develop validation datasets representing diverse sedimentary basins, geological environments, and depositional systems.
- Document interpretation methodologies, geological assumptions, and supporting evidence to ensure consistency, traceability, and reproducibility.
- Collaborate with technical stakeholders to establish consistent interpretation standards and performance benchmarks.

Hydrocarbon Indicator Evaluation

- Evaluate potential direct hydrocarbon indicators (DHIs) identified by the model, including seismic amplitude anomalies and AVO responses.
- Assess amplitude conformance to structure, flat spots, downdip terminations, and other potential fluid-related seismic responses.
- Differentiate potential hydrocarbon indicators from lithological effects, tuning, residual multiples, and other seismic artifacts.
- Provide confidence assessments and geological risk evaluations associated with model-identified indicators.
- Support the progressive expansion of DHI validation capabilities as model performance evolves.

Technical Collaboration & Advisory Support

- Partner with geoscientists, AI researchers, and technical teams to provide geological expertise throughout model evaluation.
- Communicate technical findings, interpretation uncertainties, and recommendations to multidisciplinary stakeholders.
- Contribute to the development of interpretation quality standards and model acceptance criteria.
- Provide independent technical judgment regarding the reliability and operational readiness of new seismic interpretation capabilities.

Qualifications & Experience

Required Qualifications

- Master's degree in Geophysics, Geology, Earth Sciences, or a closely related discipline. PhD preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of professional experience in exploration or development geoscience within an operator, energy company, or geoscience services organization.
- Extensive hands-on experience in seismic interpretation, including complex fault systems, structural mapping, and stratigraphic analysis.
- Demonstrated expertise in both structural and stratigraphic
- interpretation, including seismic geomorphology, seismic facies characterization, and depositional system analysis.
- Experience interpreting seismic datasets across multiple basins, plays, and geological environments, such as deepwater clastics, shelf environments, sub-salt settings, and carbonates.
- Strong understanding of geological processes, structural frameworks, and sequence-stratigraphic principles.
- Proven ability to produce detailed, structured, and technically defensible geological interpretations and written assessments.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary technical teams.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience evaluating exploration prospects that subsequently progressed through drilling, with demonstrated understanding of interpretation outcomes and geological risk.
- Strong quantitative interpretation (QI) and direct hydrocarbon indicator (DHI) evaluation capabilities.
- Experience with amplitude analysis, AVO classification, fluid-related seismic responses, and associated interpretation uncertainties.
- Familiarity with seismic interpretation challenges related to lithology-driven amplitudes, tuning effects, low-saturation gas, volcanics, coals, and seismic artifacts.
- Working knowledge of well-to-seismic ties, rock physics, and fluid substitution principles.
- Experience establishing technical interpretation standards, peer-review processes, or quality assurance frameworks.
- Familiarity with AI-assisted seismic interpretation or emerging machine learning applications in geoscience is beneficial but not required.
