Job Summary/Description:
Do you have a passion for holding the powerful accountable? Are you the kind of reporter who can take a complex legislative bill and turn it into a story that actually matters to a family in Duluth, Mankato, or Rochester? Were looking for a high-energy, autonomous State Capitol Reporter to be the face of Minnesota politics for our stations across the state. Based in the heart of the Twin Cities, youll be the bridge between the halls of power and the communities we serve—delivering news that lives on every screen, from the 6 PM broadcast to a viral social thread.
Duties/Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
What You'll Do:
Own the Capitol: Be the first to know—and the first to report—on the legislative sessions, policy shifts, and political maneuvers that shape Minnesota.
Tell stories that travel: Craft compelling content for four major Gray stations (KBJR, KEYC, KTTC, KVLY) and occasionally represent Minnesota on a national stage.
Master the multi-platform pivot: Shoot, write, and edit your own content, ensuring its optimized for a digital-first audience before it even hits the airwaves.
Lead the election charge: Take a featured role during election cycles, breaking down races and results with urgency and authority.
Connect the dots: Coordinate with newsrooms across the state to provide live hits and localized angles on statewide issues.
Build a source network: Quickly develop deep relationships with lawmakers, advocates, and community leaders to uncover the stories others miss.
Why Youll Love It Here
Unmatched reach: Your work will be seen across the state and the country, giving you a massive platform to grow your brand.
True autonomy: Youre the lead on this beat. We trust you to find the stories and tell them your way.
Innovation at scale: Join a company that is leading the digital evolution of local news—not just talking about it.
Community impact: You arent just reporting on politics; youre helping Minnesotans understand the decisions that affect their lives every day.
Qualifications/Requirements:
What You Bring:
2+ years of on-air experience: Youre comfortable in front of the camera and even more comfortable digging through a legislative docket.
A "Digital-First" brain: You dont just "post to web"—you understand how to engage an audience on social and streaming platforms.
Technical scrappiness: You can shoot, edit, and go live from the field (and yes, you can handle the 50 lbs of gear that makes the magic happen).
Political curiosity: You have a deep interest in state government and the ability to explain "how it works" without the boring jargon.
Independence and urgency: You thrive in a remote setup where youre the boss of your beat, meeting deadlines with ease and a "desire to win."
A clean driving record: Youll be traversing the Twin Cities and beyond, so a valid license is a must.
Humanity and grit: You have the empathy to tell human stories and the toughness to ask the hard questions.
