The Role
AXS is seeking a Manager, Payments and Fraud to lead macro-level analytics for AXS payment performance and fraud risk. The role uses advanced SQL, data visualization, and payments expertise to identify opportunities to increase authorization and conversion, reduce processing costs, prevent material fraud and chargeback losses, and improve payment reliability across markets, channels, and providers. Unlike transaction-review roles that make accept-or-decline decisions on individual orders, this position analyzes portfolio trends and converts findings into business, product, routing, and risk recommendations. The manager partners with Visa, Mastercard, American Express, ACI, Braintree, Stripe, and internal Product, Engineering, Finance, Operations, and Fraud Prevention teams. The role initially leads through expertise and cross-functional influence and is expected to assume direct people-management responsibility as the analytics team grows.
What Will You Do?
- Lead deep-dive analysis of payment authorization, decline, conversion, routing, settlement, and processing-cost data; identify material trends and quantify opportunities by market, issuer, network, gateway, payment method, and customer segment.
- Analyze fraud, chargeback, dispute, and loss data at the portfolio level; identify emerging patterns and control gaps, size financial exposure, and recommend changes to fraud strategies, rules, tools, and operating processes.
- Build and maintain trusted KPI definitions, SQL analyses, dashboards, and executive reporting for payment performance, fraud, chargebacks, costs, and customer impact; establish data-quality controls and clear measurement methods.
- Develop business cases and lead cross-functional optimization initiatives, experiments, and post-implementation measurement for payment routing, authorization uplift, fraud controls, payment methods, tokenization, 3DS, and cross-border performance.
- Monitor high-volume on-sales and material payment or fraud events; perform root-cause analysis, coordinate stakeholders, and translate incidents into corrective actions and longer-term improvements.
- Partner with Visa, Mastercard, American Express, ACI, Braintree, Stripe, and other providers to review performance, investigate issues, evaluate capabilities, and hold partners accountable for agreed service and optimization actions.
- Advise Product, Engineering, Finance, Operations, Fraud Prevention, and senior leaders on priorities, tradeoffs, and policy or process changes; communicate complex findings and gain support for recommendations with financial and customer impact.
- Establish the operating model, priorities, documentation, and performance standards for the analytics function; coordinate work across analysts and develop, coach, and manage direct reports as positions are added.
What Will You Bring?
- BA/BS Degree in Analytics, Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Economics, Finance, Business, or a related field. Equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
- 4-6 years of hands-on advanced SQL analysis using large transaction-level datasets and development of dashboards or data visualizations for business decisions.
- 4-6 years of progressive experience in payments analytics, fraud analytics, payment operations, risk, or a closely related field.
- 4-6 years of experience leading complex cross-functional initiatives, coordinating the work of analysts, or managing and developing team members.
- Advanced SQL skills, including the ability to join, validate, segment, and interpret large payment and fraud datasets.
- Advanced data visualization and dashboard development skills using Tableau, Looker, or comparable tools; experience working with Snowflake or a similar cloud data platform.
- Strong knowledge of card payments, authorization and decline behavior, routing, processing economics, interchange and network fees, settlement, chargebacks, disputes, and fraud controls.
- Working knowledge of payment networks and processors or gateways, including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, ACI, Braintree, and Stripe.
- Knowledge of tokenization, 3DS, alternative payment methods, cross-border payments, and the customer checkout experience.
- Ability to frame ambiguous business questions, perform root-cause analysis, quantify financial and customer impact, and recommend practical actions.
- Ability to communicate complex analysis to technical and nontechnical audiences and influence decisions across Product, Engineering, Finance, Operations, vendors, and senior leadership.
- Leadership skills to set priorities, establish standards, coordinate work, coach analysts, and build a high-performing analytics function as the team grows.
Pay Scale: $95,000 - $109,000
Bonus: This position is eligible for a bonus under the current bonus plan requirements.
