About this role
Tesla’s Energy Engineering group is looking for a highly motivated individual to program-manage enclosure design engineering for Industrial Energy Products, including Megapack and Megapod. The enclosure is the structure the rest of the product is built into: body-in-white, doors, plinth and rack interfaces, thermal and electrical bays, and the joints to site and factory. It sits at the intersection of mechanical design, structural analysis, thermal, electrical, and harness packaging. If the enclosure is late, or the configuration is wrong, every downstream system is late.
This is a cross-functional role that requires coordination between many different groups within and outside of Tesla. You will interface with mechanical, CAE, thermal, electrical, and harness design engineering, system integration and validation, manufacturing engineering and operations, supply chain, compliance, reliability, safety, service, and field operations to define and drive enclosure development on new programs while also managing change on programs already in production or ramp.
As part of the Engineering Program Management team, you will be immersed in the design, validation, and manufacturing process and will shepherd enclosure scope from concept through prototype validation, production ramp, and sustaining change. You will use your engineering background to understand packaging and manufacturing constraints, structural and environmental risk, and what has to be released before the factory can build. You will communicate and present program status, highlight schedule risk, and develop recovery plans in the event of project slip.
As an Engineering Program Manager, you will be expected to operate with a high degree of autonomy on your programs while contributing to the tools, trackers, and cadence that improve risk and change management for the organization.
You will be based in the Bay Area (Palo Alto), with travel to manufacturing and pilot sites in California, Nevada, and Texas, and to other factories as the program requires.
- Partner with design, CAE, thermal, electrical, harness, reliability, safety, compliance, supply chain, NPI, manufacturing, and service to scope enclosure work for Industrial Energy Products
- Own enclosure scope from architecture through Start of Production, including schedule, design-release content, phase-exit reviews, sample and test planning, and launch readiness
- Build and present schedules to engineering leadership across design, validation, tooling, and manufacturing readiness: know the critical path; when a date moves, state what else moves and the recovery
- Drive release of 2D drawings, 3D/STEP, exploded BOMs, and part-number and revision control in PLM
- Run change control after design release and before PLM submission to keep configuration aligned across design iterations and build phases
- Make sure the right quantity of parts and assemblies is clear to build on time for prototype, pre-production, and test builds: track long-lead material and hardtooling
- Hold the interfaces that unblock adjacent systems: doors and general assembly, rack and plinth mounting, thermal and breaker bays, harness and busbar routing, and site and factory constraints
- Drive structural, environmental, and manufacturability risks (lift, transport, seismic, coating, warranty, DFM, tooling) to dated mitigations
- Run standups, design-team meetings, program reviews, and change control, with an agenda for every meeting and same-day notes
- Publish a weekly cross-functional update covering schedule changes, plan-of-record decisions, test failures, tooling and long-lead status, supply risk, and build blockers
- Prioritize by risk, resources, and payback, and find a path through obstacles, and keep improving trackers, dashboards, and templates
- Proven record leading complex engineering programs for mass-produced hardware (energy, automotive, industrial equipment, or similar)
- Working knowledge of sheet-metal and structural fabrication, doors, latches, hinges, packaging, GD&T, and drawings
- Comfort in CAD reviews (CATIA / 3DEXPERIENCE or equivalent)
- Experience with prototype and pilot builds, validation, line bring-up, and ramp to rate
- Experience building and communicating multi-function schedules, including critical-path recovery
- Understanding of multilevel BOMs, PLM release and change management, and configuration control from first article through production
- Experience driving clear-to-build, sample allocation, and long-lead tooling across more than one factory or region
- Detail oriented, with strong record-keeping skills
- Experience aligning engineering, supply chain, NPI, quality, and manufacturing; established credibility in a design review and on the factory floor
- Ability to be the face of the program, with the same directness for a design engineer and an executive
- Degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent experience
