Job Purpose:
We are seeking an experienced Senior Hyper-V Infrastructure Engineer to build the target Microsoft Hyper-V platform and migrate our client's server workloads off VMware safely and on schedule. The client's VMware licences expire in November 2026, so this is a time-critical, hands-on delivery role. The successful candidate will act as the senior technical authority for the server workload migration on HPE ProLiant hosts: ~100 production server VMs (TAG cluster) and a single-host backup recovery cluster moving from VMware vSphere 8.0 to Microsoft Hyper-V. He/She will plan and run a rolling host-by-host migration, protect service continuity throughout, work closely with the VDI/XenServer workstream, and leave behind documentation the client's operations team can run with.
Key Responsibilities:

- Microsoft Hyper-V Platform Build & Hardening Build, configure, and harden Hyper-V hosts (Windows Server 2019/2022 Datacenter) on HPE ProLiant hardware, including iLO, firmware/SPP, and driver compliance.
- Design and deploy Hyper-V Failover Clusters: Cluster Shared Volumes, quorum/witness, live migration, and Switch Embedded Teaming.
- Configure virtual networking (Hyper-V virtual switches, VLANs, SET/NIC teaming) and SAN storage connectivity (iSCSI/FC, MPIO) to match the existing VMware design.
- Deploy and configure management tooling (SCVMM and/or Windows Admin Center), including host groups, logical networks, VM templates, and role-based access.
- Stand up the Hyper-V environment for ~100 production server VMs (TAG cluster) and the single-host recovery environment.
- Integrate the new hosts with Active Directory, DNS, monitoring, and patching tooling.

- Server Workload Migration (VMware Exit) Assess the VMware vSphere 8.0 server estate (clusters, VM inventory, application dependencies, networks, datastores) and produce the migration plan and cutover schedule against the 11 November 2026 deadline.
- Run a rolling migration: evacuate a host, rebuild it as Hyper-V, migrate workloads, and repeat, using spare cluster capacity to avoid disruption.
- Convert and migrate VMs using appropriate V2V tooling (e.g. SCVMM, Windows Admin Center VM Conversion, Veeam restore to Hyper-V), including VMware Tools removal, Integration Services, Generation 1/2 decisions, and network/IP re-mapping.
- Plan and execute a safe approach for the single-host recovery cluster, where no spare capacity exists.
- Define test, validation, and rollback procedures for each cutover, and coordinate change windows, out-of-hours activity, and application owner sign-off with the client.
- Decommission VMware hosts once workloads are verified and signed off.

- Backup, Resilience & Security Rebuild and migrate the Veeam backup server and backup proxy onto Hyper-V; reconfigure backup jobs for Hyper-V and confirm repositories and restore tests work on the new platform.
- Configure high availability, VM placement and anti-affinity rules, and checkpoint policies for production workloads.
- Apply security hardening aligned to CIS Benchmarks and Microsoft Security Baselines on all new hosts.
- Establish patching and lifecycle processes for the new hosts (e.g. WSUS / SCCM / MECM / Cluster-Aware Updating).

- Automation, Documentation & Handover Automate repetitive build, configuration, and migration tasks using PowerShell (Hyper-V and FailoverClusters modules).
- Produce build documentation, runbooks, and operational handover for the client's infrastructure team, and brief them on day-to-day management.
- Coordinate with the Citrix XenServer / VDI workstream on shared hardware, networks, storage, and the overall migration schedule.

Qualification, Skills and Experience:

- 10+ years of relevant experience in virtualisation and Wintel infrastructure, with deep hands-on expertise in Microsoft Hyper-V.
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science , Information Technology or Engineering.
- Strong hands-on experience building and managing Microsoft Hyper-V hosts and Failover Clusters (Cluster Shared Volumes, live migration, quorum, Switch Embedded Teaming) in production.
- Strong experience with System Center Virtual Machine Manager and/or Windows Admin Center for managing Hyper-V at scale.
- Proven experience migrating 100+ server VMs from VMware to Hyper-V with minimal downtime, using V2V tooling such as SCVMM, Windows Admin Center VM Conversion, or Veeam.
- Good understanding of VMware vSphere/ESXi 7.x/8.x, including vCenter, VM export (OVF/VMDK), VMware Tools removal, and host decommissioning.
- Hands-on experience with HPE ProLiant servers, including iLO, firmware/SPP compliance, and Smart Array configuration.
- Good understanding of storage and SAN technologies, including Fibre Channel, iSCSI, and MPIO, and their use with Hyper-V Cluster Shared Volumes.
- Understanding of networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, VLANs, LACP/NIC teaming, switching, and firewalls.
- Good understanding of backup and disaster recovery technologies, especially Veeam Backup & Replication in Hyper-V environments (backup server/proxy rebuilds, repositories, restore testing).
- Strong experience in Windows Server administration (2016/2019/2022/2025), including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy management.
- Hands-on experience with PowerShell scripting (including the Hyper-V and FailoverClusters modules) for infrastructure automation, administration, and migration tasks.
- Experience implementing security baselines and hardening standards, including CIS Benchmarks and Microsoft Security Baselines, and managing patching (WSUS / SCCM / MECM / Cluster-Aware Updating).
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills across Hyper-V, Failover Clustering, Windows, networking, storage, and other infrastructure layers.
- Experience producing migration runbooks, cutover plans, rollback procedures, and working within change management processes.
- Excellent documentation and communication skills, with the ability to clearly document technical solutions, operational procedures, and handover material.
- Exposure to Citrix XenServer or Azure Stack HCI / Azure Local is desirable.
- Prior VMware exit / hypervisor replatforming project experience is desirable.
- Relevant certifications are desirable: Microsoft (Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate / Azure Stack HCI) or VMware Certified Professional – Data Center Virtualization (VCP-DCV).
